12/12/14 Winter is coming (3-0 KTK draft, 3-0 KTK draft)

Ever since I lost my Tarmogoyf at Anime Imports on 11/20/14, I haven't felt the urge to play constructed.  I went to Versus Games on 11/25/14 but they didn't have enough people to fire off a draft, so I went home, dejected.   I started leveling in World of Warcraft again, and that's been taking up all my free time.  Still, I have been making some time to attend the FNM event at Gamescape North.

That being said, here's my deck lists:

11/28/14  http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/2014-11-28-post-thanksgiving-ktk-draft-deck/

11/25/14 Current MTG want list

2 Cryptic Command
4 Scapeshift
1 Tarmogoyf
1 Windswept Heath
1 Noble Hierarch
1 Linvala, Keeper of Silence

Maybe:
2 Arid Mesa
3 Lightning Helix
1 Village Bell-ringer  (common)
1 Rest for the Weary (common)
2 Wear/Tear (uncommon)
2 Pyroclasm (uncommon)
2 Stony Silence
1 Echoing Truth (common)
1 or 2 Sorin, Solemn Visitor
3 Battlefield Forge
3 Flooded Strand

Don't really want to buy any more standard staples (expensive cards).  Kinda wish I had drafted more painlands when M15 drafts were available.  They went from 2 bucks to 7 bucks.  :(

11/21/14 The Definition of Insanity, KTK draft 2-0-1

I got four hours of sleep the previous night, because I was stressed out because my Tarmogoyf got pilfered at Anime Imports.  I went to a draft at Gamescape North, anyways.

P1P1:  Rakshasa Deathdealer.

P2P1:  Rare was Meandering Towershell, but I took Sandsteppe Citadel.

P3P1:  Rare was Deflecting Palm.

My deck was kinda poor, with the only win conditions being 2 Alabaster Kirin.

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/2014-11-21-ktk-draft-deck/

Match 1:   Sultai stuff

Game 1:

I win off Rakshasa Deathdealer into Sultai Flayer into Pine Walker.

Game 2:

I lose to Swarm of Bloodflies and removal spells.

Game 3:

I win because of creature beatdown, again.

Match 2:  5 color

Game 1:

Abzan Guide + Become Immense = GG, especially once I also play Kin-Tree Invocation post combat to make a 10/10 Spirit Warrior.

Game 2:

Lose because I'm stuck with three white cards in hand (Ainok Bond-Kin, Kill Shot, Alabaster Kirin) and none of my six white sources.

Game 3:

He plays a turn 2 Archer's Parapet in his 5 color deck.

Game goes to time.  Sigh.  Now I can't win the promo card.

If I had an extra turn I could beat him with Dazzling Ramparts to tap down two of his guys (assuming he didn't play another blocker).

I might have punted the turn I attacked with my Sultai Flayer and my morphed Woolly Loxodon.  And then I decided to play a Pine Walker instead of flipping the Woolly Loxodon, then he played Bring Low on the Loxodon.   But I think it didn't matter because the judge called time (begin extra turns) when I played Pine Walker.

Match 3:   Mardu stuff (2-0)

I got paired up.  I had 1 win, 1 draw.  I played against a guy with 2 wins.

Game 1:

I win off Pine Walker and Woolly Loxodon.  It doesn't even matter that I forget to play Woolly Loxodon as a morph turn 4.  Woops.

Game 2.

I go down to 4 life thanks to Act of Treason + Unyielding Krumar with Molting Snakeskin and Ride Down.  But I eventually stabilize and CRUSH.

Result:  2 wins, 1 draw.  4 packs and no promo card, even though I beat the only undefeated person in my draft pod.  Booo.

11/20/14 I should have stayed home, 0-3 Modern

I decided to play Yiwen Song midrange.

Match 1:  Affinity (1-2)

Game 1:

My opponent plays a turn 3 Ensoul Artifact on Darksteel Citadel, and I go to 5 life, but somehow I manage to turn the game around and win.  Despite the fact that he has Spell Pierce for my first Cryptic Command.

Game 2:

He played a Signal Pest into Cranial Plating.  I played a 5/6 Tarmogoyf.  He played a second Cranial Plating, and I said "sure" which he interpreted as that resolves.  I wanted to Mana Leak but he said it was too late.  I was like uggg.  Of course I can''t deal with taking 10 damage from his double Cranial Plating, so I concede.

Game 3:

He plays double Etched Champion with metalcraft, into double Arcbound Ravager.  Easy game easy life.

My opponent offered to write down that I won the match, but I told him I don't care.  I take my loss in stride.

Match 2:    Jund (0-2)

Game 1:

Lost to a turn 2 Bob that gains him 5 cards in advantage.  Yeah.

Game 2:

Kept a 2 lander on the play, he plays a Fulminator Mage and I proceed to not draw a 3rd land until I'm at 7 life and have to play Threads of Disloyalty on his Tarmogoyf (untapped).  Of course, he has Abrupt Decay and I lose.

Match 3:  Birthing Pod (1-2)

It was fated that I would play against my friend, again.  Of course, this time I was playing a deck that was softer to Birthing Pod, than G/R tron was.

Game 1:

He plays a turn 5 Archangel of Thune, with Spellskite backup.

I try to play a Snapcaster Mage into Forked Bolt into Lightning Bolt to kill his Spellskite, but I mistap my mana, so I scoop in shame.

Game 2:

Won off Blood Moon.

Game 3:

Lost to the Spike Feeder + Archangel of Thune infinite Combo.  I killed the Spike Feeder with Electrolyze (he removed 2 counters in response of course).  Then he played Reveilark.  Which I knew he could just return his Spike Feeder to play with it.  I played Anger of the Gods killing his Reveillark and two other creatures.  I probably should have just waited until I could draw Relic of Progenitus, so I could clear away his graveyard with Spike Feeder.  Of course, he plays Archangel of Thune next turn, and I scoop.   Relic of Progenitus was the next draw in my deck.

Result:  0-3

I am pretty frustrated now.

11/15/14 Late Modern (2-1)

I stayed up super late again.   I had 6 hours sleep on Tuesday night, 6 hours sleep on Wednesday Night, 6 hours sleep on Thursday night, then 5 hours sleep on Friday night.  Ugh.  Despite that, I went to a Modern tournament at Anime Imports.  I was originally going to play UR Delver, but audibled into G/R Tron.

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/17-11-14-gr-tron/

Match 1:  Pod (1-2)

Game 1:

He played turn 2 birthing pod, but turn 4 Oblivion Stone + activate into turn 5 Karn = win.

Game 2:

Opponent played turn 2 Birthing Pod again, and  I lost to turn 2 Fulminator Mage.

Game 3:

Opponent had Fulminator Mage again.

I was at 17 life with Karn in play, he topdecked Gavony Township, pumped his team, swung at me for 12.   Lost to double fulminator mage into Kataki, War's Wage. Next turn I could play Ulamog and go to 2 (if I exiled a creature with Karn) but I don't think I would ripping out of that.   So I conceded prematurely

Match 2:  Bye

I played some games of standard during my bye.

Match 3:   Pod (2-1)

Game 1:

He has turn 1 Viscera Seer, turn 3 Kitchen Finks.

I play a Forest turn 1, so I can play Ancient Stirrings.  Then I start Assembling the Tron with Mine into Sylvan Scrying for Tower next turn.   Then I drew a Power Plant for turn 4 Tron + Karn.

I try to exile his Kitchen Finks with Karn, then he sacs it to Viscera Seer.  Oops.  I could have won the game if I just made him exile a card instead.

Game 2:

I lose to Birthing Pod + creature beatdown, as I can't draw any Pyroclasm or Oblivion Stone, or blocking creatures.  I also got stuck on no green mana which hurt, plus my opponent play Aven Mindcensor to shut down my Eye of Ugin.

Game 3:

Turn 1 Chromatic Star into Turn 2 Spellskite into Turn 3 Tron + Karn.

On the other hand my opponent plays a Noble Hierarch into a Reclamation Sage targeting my Star (thanks!).  I play a turn 3 Karn, followed by a turn 4 Pyroclasm to wipe out Noble Hierarch and Reclamation Sage = value.  He plays an Aven Mindcensor which I exile with Karn.  Then I play an Oblivion Stone and put a fate counter on Karn.  Next turn I play a Wurmcoil Engine, which my opponent doesn't block with his Viscera Seer.    I exile his lands until he's down to just 1 Verdant Catacombs, and he scoops.  There's no way he can come back at this point.

Result:  2-1

I picked up a Vedalken Shackles with my store credit.

11/14/14 Late standard report (1-2)

I took a half day off from work on Friday.  I left for Anime Imports, but it turned out there was a bunch of traffic, so I made a right turn to go to Versus Games instead for their 4 pm standard.  The 4 pm Standard tournament was kinda low (5 people until I got there with two friends).  The draft had 7 people.  I thought about leaving the standard to draft instead, but that would have left the standard tournament with 7 people.

This is the deck I played:
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/2014-11-08-jeskai-windowscleaner/

Match 1:  Jeskai Ascendancy/Tempo hybrid (2-1)

Game 1:

I barely win this game thanks to all my burn spells keeping his Seekers of the Way under control, even though he had Jeskai Ascendancy online.

Game 2:

Lose to Disdainful Stroke and End Hostilities, plus Seeker of the Way beatdown + burn.

Game 3:

I win this game because my opponent gets stuck on 2 lands for a few turns, and I had turn 3 Brimaz. I burn away his first Seeker of the Way.  Then I punt here, when I attack with Brimaz, and have Brimaz + two tokens attacking.  I decide to hold up mana to use Devouring Light on his Seeker of the Way.after blocks.   I could have played Mantis Rider, and just used Mantis Rider + tokens to convoke Devouring Light after blocks.

Match 2:    Abzan Midrange (0-2)

Game 1:

Opponent's playing maindeck Drown in Sorrows in Abzan, kills my Hushwing Gryff.

Lost to Reaper of the Wilds + Elspeth

Game 2:

This game lasted a bit longer, but ultimately I still ended losing to double Courser + double Siege Rhino.

Match 3: G/b devotion (0-2)

Game 1:

I thought I had this game, but multiple Courser of Kruphix into Hornet Queen meant I died.

Game 2:

Turn 4 Whip with no answer on my part, was pretty bad news.

I punted here.  Had my opponent down to 6. She attacked with a Courser of Kruphix, which would gain her 2 life.  I had the choice to Stoke the Flames her, or Stoke the Flames the Courser.  I stoked the Courser.  Of course, then I topdeck a mountain to play the Stormbreath Dragon in my hand, which eats a Hero's Downfall.  I top an End Hostilities, but due to card advantage from Eidolon of Blossoms + Courser of Kruphix, I can't win.

Result:  1-2

A frustrating tournament for me.   I lost to Abzan which was fine, because I was an underdog there. But I lost to G/b devotion which is normally a good matchup for me.

11/9/14 I Forgot to Remember to Forget (KTK draft 1-2, 0-1-1 drop)

I went to Versus Games today for the Ivan Jen celebration party.  I also joined a couple of drafts:

FIRST DRAFT

P1P1:  Rare was Deflecting Palm.  Eww.

P2P1:  Siege Rhino for boyksVALUE.
P3P1:  See the Unwritten.

Somehow Mer-Ek Nightblade wheels in pack 3.  Wow.

DECK:
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/2014-11-09-ktk-draft-deck-1/

Match 1:  4 color stuff (2-0)

This was the guy who crushed me during one of the Journey to Nyx prerelease matches.

Game 1:

I get Trail of Mystery into ferocious See the Unwritten and Incremental Growth.  All the VALUE.

Game 2:

I play Secret Plans and draw a bunch of cards.  Yay.

Match 2:  4 color better stuff (0-2)

This is the guy who crushed me last week with 5 color Jeskai Ascendancy + Take Up Arms + Hordeling Outburst. Gahhh.

Game 1:

Lose to nut draw of Ainok Bond-kin into Tusk-Guard Captain into double Mardu Warshrieker and a morph.  Of course my opponent also has Ghostfire Blade.

Game 2:

Lost to nut draw again.  Turn 1 Ghostfire Blade is good.

Match 3:  BW warriors (1-2)

Game 1:

End up losing to Warrior aggro with Raider's Spoils.

Game 2:

Opponent scoops to Trail of Mystery + Secret Plans card drawing combo.  Not sure why.

Game 3:

Opponent casts Utter End on my Trail of Mystery.   I end up losing to Raider's Spoils again.

SECOND DRAFT

P1P1:   Howl of the Horde was the rare.  I took Pine Walker.

P1P2:  I took Chief of the Edge over Armament Corps.

P1P6:   Mardu-Heart Piercer.  How does this happen?

P1P7:  Feat of Resistance.

P2P1:   Flying Crane Technique was the rare.  I think I took Salt Road Patrol.  It was a terrible pack for me.

P2P2:  I got passed Necropolis Fiend, even though this card is pretty bad for a rare.

P3P1:   I took Mardu Roughrider over Grim Haruspex.  Grim Haruspex is good, but it doesn't proc off token deaths, which is annoying.  Perhaps I should have taken the Grim Haruspex.

Deck:
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/2014-11-09-ktk-draft-deck-2/

I probably should have dropped my black cards, and shifted into red/white splashing blue, or red/blue splashing white.  Unfortunately I wasn't seeing much of the good payoff cards in pack 1.

Match 1:  Abzan (1-1 draw)

Game 1:

I play turn 1 Mardu Hateblade.  My opponent plays an Archer's Parapet.   Next turn, when I attack with my Hateblade, my opponent blocks with the Parapet, and I pay for deathtouch.

My opponent plays turn 3 Rakshasa Deathdealer, I play Debilitating Injury.

Game 2:

My opponent plays turn 2 Rakshasa Deathdealer, but decides to be passive.  It doesn't matter, because the game ends up in a huge board stall.  I manage to get him down to 4 life with Rush of Battle attack, then attack him down to 2 with an Alabaster Kirin.  He removes the Alabaster Kirin with Savage Punch.  Then he stabilizes at 2 life.  I forget I have Ruthless Ripper face down, and play out a Necropolis Fiend without flipping the Ruthless Ripper.  :(

Then next turn, he swings with his team, and I block in such a way that I die to his Master of Pearls that was face down.  Fuck me.

I was at 13 life.  He swung with his team, I made a bunch of blocks, left my Necrpolis Fiend and Ruthless Ripper (face down) out of blocks.  I left Fiend back in case of pump so it wouldn't die.  In case he top decked a removal for Fiend post combat, I left Ripper back in case I actually topdecked another black card so I could finish him off.  So he hit me with 2 dudes, who I thought had 3 power apiece.  I accounted for double ping with Archer's Parapet for 2 dmg, but because of Raiders Spoils and Master of Pearls, they went up to 6 power apiece.  I should have just chumped with the Ruthless Ripper since my chance of topdecking a black card was slim at that point.

The worst part is that the kid's dad was hovering over the entire match.   Once I lost the dad was all haughty about it.  I had played against the dad a few months ago and he was a known complainer/whiner.  What is it with dads who complain/whine about Magic?

It also didn't help that the kid put all his lands in ONE stack on top of each other.

Game 3:

The game ends up as a draw.  Fuck.

Match 2:  Five color good stuff (1-1 draw)

Game 1:

I managed to barely win this game after going down to 1 life.  It was a ridiculous slog though.

Game 2:

I lost this game due to using my removal sheepishly, and lost to Avalanche Tusker into Icy Blast my team for lethal.

Game 3:

I go turn 1 Mardu Hateblade into turn 2 Chief of the Edge.  A Force Away and Arc Lightning lets my opponent stabilize at 9.

I almost had my opponent dead with Ponyback Brigade, Disowned Ancestor, and Rush of Battle.  Unfortunately he has Icy Blast for the first Rush, and Temur Charm for the second Rush.
The game goes to turns, and he plays Sage of the Inward Eye into Taigam's Scheming to gain 3 life from attacking with Shambling Attendants.   The game goes to turns and I concede, since I already have 1 draw, and getting 2 draws means I likely won't win any prizes, even if I got 1 win and 2 draws, but he's got 1 win already.

11/7/14 KTKcraft: Sultai War (FNM KTK draft 3-0)

There was more traffic than normal.  I ended up not getting to Gamescape North until 5:45 p.m.  The store was packed with 41 people.

P1P1:  Bloodstained Mire over Mer-ek Nightblade.

P2P1:  Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker over Abzan Falconer.  At least I'm passing the insane outlast guy the other way.

P3P1:   Bellowing Saddlebrute over Hardened Scales.

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/2014-11-07-pjsalt-ai-draft/

Round 1:  Jeskai (2-1)

Game 1:

Played a Villanous Wealth for 6, my opponent played End Hostilties afterwards.  However, he then flooded out, and died.

Game 2:

Played into End Hostilities, lost two Archer's Parapet, a (morphed) Abomination of Gudul, and a Swarm of Bloodflies.  Proceeded to die to Mardu Hordechief and Riverwheel Aerialists.

Game 3:

Opponent used End Hostilities, trading two Hordechiefs and his End Hostilities for four of my creatures.   That sucked.  He played a Monastery Flock (face up). I played a Sultai Scavenger.   I put Debilitating Injury on his Flock pre-combat (mistake).  Then he Crippling Chill'd my Scavenger.  Eventually we both go into topdeck mode, and I play Villainous Wealth for 9.  My opponent scoops on the spot.

Round 2:  Mardu (1-0)

Game 1:

My opponent gets me down to 2 life because of Mardu Roughrider, Chief of the Edge and Mardu Ascendancy.  He also plays Molting Snakeskin on a 1/1 warrior token.  He showed me a bunch of burn (Arc Lightning, Arrow Storm) so I needed to finish him soon.  He sac's two Goblin tokens to Dead Drop.  He's got a Warrir token with Molting Snakeskin on it, then plays a Unyielding Krumar.   I'm attacking cautiously with just Abomination of Gudul, leaving my Woolly Loxodon and Sagu Archer on defense.  I'm trying to not die, but I know he might have other burn in his deck.  Then I filter all the way to Villainous Wealth (thanks to my Abomination of Gudul) and Villainous Wealth him for 9, revealing a 1/1, a 2/2, and a 3/3.  I forget to use the Warshieker raid trigger to cast the morph in my hand (Sagu Archer).  I Erase his Molting Snakeskin (not that it really matter) then swing in my with team for lethal.

Game 2:

I have a turn 1 play (Disowned Ancestor) and my opponent's first play is Mardu Hordechief.

My opponent plays Mardu Ascendancy and Mardu Roughrider again.  I double block his Rough Rider with my 2/6 Disowned Ancestor and Sagu Archer.  He hits me for 9 with his Warshieker, Unyielding Krumar, and 3 Goblin tokens.  But then I stabilize with Hooded Hydra and Archer's Parapet.  Then the game goes to turns, and I stall for the win.

Round 3:   Abzan (2-0)

Game 1:

My opener is Villainous Wealth and Woolly Loxodon and 5 lands.   I mull to 6, get a much better hand.  End up drawing Villainous Wealth again anyways.   My opponent only plays a Archer's Parapet.  My Hooded Hydra + Bellowing Saddlebrute make quick work of him.  Debilitating Injury post combat finishes off his Parapet.

Game 2:

My opponent mulls to 6, but plays turn 1 Hardened Scales into turn 4 Salt Road Patrol then turn 5 Abzan Falconer.  He's also got three Feat of Resistance, Armament Corps, Mer-Ek Nightblade, and a Dragonscale Boon.   Thanks to some timely uses of removal, I manage to navigate through all the 4/9's and 11/12's.

One turn I attack with Bellowing Saddlebrute into his Abzan Falconer (4/5) and Armament Corp (4/4).  He blocks only with the Falconer.  I follow up with a Debilitating Injury.    I don't know why he didn't block with both creatures.

Result:  3-0 (6-1 in games)

Only got five booster packs instead of the usual six booster packs.   Apparently because there were five draft pods, and six people who went 3-0.   So six people got five booster packs, instead of five people getting six booster packs.

Sunday, November 2, 2014

11/2/14 Lazy Sunday KTK drafts (1-2, 1-2)

I had a slight headache.  I went to Versus Games to draft at 1 pm and 4 pm.

Draft 1:

P1P1:  Abzan Battle Priest over Jeskai Ascendancy.

P2P1:  Murderous Cut over Howl of the Horde.

P3P1:   Took some card over Mardu Ascendancy.

Passed a couple of kill shots.  Passed one Kill Shot for Woolly Loxodon, passed the other Kill Shot for mana fixing.

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/2014-11-02-ktk-draft-deck-1/

Person on my right was Abzan.   Person on his right was also Abzan.  wtf.   Person on my left was Temur.

Match 1:  5 color Jeskai Ascendancy

Game 1:

Lost to Jeskai Ascendancy and Feat of Resistance and Hordeling Outburst.  Sweet.

Game 2:

Lost to Jeskai Ascendandy and Feat of Resistance and Take Up Arms and Ride Down. Sweet.

Match 2:   Temur (2-0)

Game 1:

I blow my opponent out when he goes for Savage Punch on my Abzan Battle Priest, because I play Smite the Monstrous to kill his Alpine Grizzly.  He plays Icy Blast with Ferocious but I still win.

Game 2:

He plays Icy Blast with Ferocious but I still win.  I have Abzan Battle Priest and Ainok Bond-kin and Armament Corps and Abzan Guide.  boyksValue

Match 3:  Abzan splash red (2-1)

Game 1:

This game gets kinda grindy but I manage to win thanks to 7/7 Kin-Tree Invocation token and 6/7 Woolly Loxodon, and Dragonscale Boon for lethal when I swing out.

Game 2:

Lost to turn 3 Tuskguard Captain into turn 4 Brave the Sands.  My opening was just way too slow.

Game 3:

I got punished for playing Murderous Cut on my opponent's Woolly Loxodon EOT.  I should have waited until my turn, and used Rite of the Serpent to kill it.  Then my opponent played Rush of Battle into Become Immense when I blocked his Krumar Bond-kin with my 4/3 Ainok Bond-kin, so he gained 19 life because he attacked with his Krumar Bond-kin and Bellowing Saddlebrute.   That sucked.  Of course he kills me with Crater's Claw when he's at 19 life.  I think he would have been dead if I had saved Murderous Cut in response to Become Immense.

Result:  1-2

The salt is real. Fortunately, the first draft ended right just as the draft 2 started.

Draft 2:

P1P1:  Took Ghostfire Blade over Mardu Charm and Hordeling Outburst.

P1P2:   Got passed Flying Crane Technique.

P2P1:   Passed Villainous Wealth.

P3P1:  Took Ride Down over Narset.

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/2014-11-02-ktk-draft-deck-2/

Match 1:   Jeskai (1-2)

Played against the same guy from Match 3 last draft.

Game 1:

My opponent has a TON of tricks (double Temur Charm, and Winterflame) and kills me with Crater's Claw.

Game 2:

Win even though it was still a close game, thanks to Ghostfire Blade and Ride Down and Waterwhirl.

Game 3:

Lost to Crater's Claw, when I had him DOB next turn.  Gah.

Update:   I realize I punted during one of these games, when I had face-down Mystic of the Hidden Way and face-down Glacial Stalker in hand.  I equipped Ghostfire Blade to my face-down Glacial Stalker, and he popped a Scaldkin.  I had mana to flip up my Glacial Stalker in response, but I didn't, probably because I forgot Glacial Stalker costs 5 to flip.

Match 2:  Jeskai (2-0)

Game 1:

My opponent has turn 2 Jeskai Elder and all the tricks.  Of course, I eventually manage to outclass his guys with my creatures.

Game 2:

This game was a lost closer.  With my opponent playing turn 2 Jeskai Elder again, and then turn 6 Riverwheel Aerialists.  Using Set Adrift, Waterwhirl, and Treasure Cruise into Force Away and Flying Crane Technique, I win.

Match 3:  Temur (1-2)

Game 1:

Kept a 1 lander on a mull to 6, proceed to die because I can't draw two more lands.  I should have mulled to 5 IMO.

Game 2:

Won thanks to flyers.   I bounced his guy with Force Away in response to Savage Punch, and time walked him.

Game 3:

Lost to Dragonscale Boon and Burn Away and double Hordeling Outburst.

10/31/14 3spooky5me Halloween standard and DKA/INN/INN draft (1-2, 2-0-1)

Gamescape North wasn't doing anything on Halloween, so I went over to Anime Imports to play in the standard, then got dinner before going to the Innistrad draft.

I played Jeskai aggro again.

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/2014-10-31-jeskai-windowscleaner/

Match 1:  Sultai control (1-2)

Game 1:

Mulled to 5, didn't draw a 3rd land until turn 10.  So I lost.

Game 2:

Burned my opponent out, but it was close.
Game 3:

Lost to Feed the Clan, plus DOUBLE negate.  If I topdecked a burn spell I could have still killed him.  Died to Polukranos + Raksasha Deathdealer.

Match 2:    Jeskai heroic ascendancy (2-1)

Game 1:

Lost to Jeskai Ascendancy + a swarm of tokens from Launch the Fleet and Akroan Crusader.

Game 2:

Had Banishing Light for Jeskai Ascendancy this time, and killed him with double Seeker, then Rabblemaster, and Arc Lightning for the win.

Game 3:

My opponent made like 8 tokens, but I was trading damage with him, and I killed him with Stoke the Flame into Jeskai Charm.

Match 3:  Naya good stuff (1-2)

Game 1:

I kill my opponent with Mantis Rider and burn spells, like I'm supposed to.

Game 2:

My opponent plays Wingmate Roc and Stormbreath Dragon, I lose. He gains way too much life off his attacks.

Game 3:

My opponent plays double Stormbreath Dragon, and Wingmate Roc.  I lose.   If I had topdecked a burn spell I would have won (he was at 3 life).

Result:  1-2

$4 store credit

DKA/INN/INN draft

P1P1:  Thalia, Guardian of Thraben over Drogskol Captain

P2P1:  Moorland Haunt

P3P1:   Battleground Geist over  Back from the Brink.

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/2014-10-31-dkainninn-draft/

Person on my right dropped out of the draft before the first match even began.  He wanted to join a KTK draft that was firing.  Person on my left appeared to be in black/red.

Match 1:  Sultai good stuff (1-1 draw)

Game 1:

Mull to 4, lose to Grimgrin.

Game 2:

Win off double Battleground Geist.

Game 3:

I get blown out by Thalia trading with Abbatoir Ghoul, then my opponent playing Woodland Sleuth.  Tricksy.

Match tied, because my opponent plays Spider Spawning and flashes it back.  Ugh.

Match 2:  Azorious stuff (2-1)

Game 1:

Win with flyers

Game 2:

 Lost this game

Game 3:

Win with flyers again

Match 3:    RG wolves (2-1)

Game 1:

Opponent got color screwed apparently.

Game 2:

I lose to Instigator Gang.

Game 3:

This game gets a bit grindy, with my opponent playing turn 3 Elder of Laurels, and turn 4 Orchard Spirit.  I ultimately win thanks to flyers/bounce spells.

Result:  2-1

I split the third round, so I ended up with $12 store credit from that

I spent 29 dollars on tournaments, 41 dollars on food.  Got $16 store credit out of the deal.   Not exactly a good trade, but I was entertained for roughly 6 hours.

10/27/14 Getting savagely smashed, KTK draft 1-2

I went to Versus Games for the 7 pm KTK draft.

P1P1:  Polluted Delta over Chief of the Edge
P1P2:  Sandsteppe Citadel over Nomad Outpost and crap.
P1P3:  Kin-Tree Invocation over Opulent Palace.

I just end up taking mana fixing, thinking I'll go five color.

Black cards dry up in this pack.  I start moving into blue/green.

P2P1:  Howl of the Horde was the rare. I don't remember what I took.
P2P3:  Savage Knuckleblade.  Now I badly need red mana fixing.
P3P1:  Ugin's Nexus was the rare.  I think I slammed a Rugged Highlands.

Final deck:
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/2014-10-27-ktk-draft-deck/

I didn't quite get enough mana fixing to make Temur great.  Also I was missing Snowhorn Riders (but I would also needed the Swiftwater Cliffs or Thornwood Falls to make that work).

Mistake:  I passed a third Mystic of the Hidden Way for a Mistfire Weaver.

Also I think this deck needed a Barrage of Boulders (I passed one).

Match 1:   4 color stuff

Game 1:

Lose to Kheru Lich Lord and flyers.

Game 2:

Lose to Rakshasa Vizier, Rakshasa Deathdealer, and Dead Drop.

Match 2:  4 color stuff

Game 1:

I board into Temur Ascendancy for this game.

Opponent plays a Sorin, and gains 11 life from it, but I still manage to win, after killing Sorin.

I win off a hasty Tusked Colossodon from Temur Ascendancy (and a draw a card for value).

Game 2:

I end up with a durdly draw, and he's got some removal spells.

He plays Abomination of Gudul and Sultai Scavenger and I have no answers.

Game 3:

Barely beat the opponent, thanks to EoT Temur Charm on Archer's Parapet, swing for lethal.

Opponent

Game 3:

Match 3:   5 color stuff

Game 1:

Keep a 3 lander on the play, died to Alabaster Kirin and Shambling Attendants.

Game 2:

Opponent played High Sentinels of Arashin, I manage to kill it with Savage Knuckleblade into Savage Punch, but didn't have red mana to haste Savage Knuckleblade to attack that turn.

Game gets super grindy with my opponent playing Shambling Attendants into Rotting Mastodon into Longshot Squad and Incremental Growth, then a Woolly Loxodon.  I bounce his Longshot Squad end of turn, topdeck Temur Charm, play it, and he concedes.

Game 3:

Ended up losing to Longshot Squad + Ainok Bond-kin into double Woolly Loxodon.   Ainok Bond-kin and Longshot Squad basically shut down all my offense.

Result:  1-2

I had Temur Ascendancy in the deck for one game, but took it out for Weave Fate aftterwards.  I felt like I wasn't playing enough 4+ power guys to trigger it, like Snowhorn Rider or Woolly Loxodon.   Maybe I have played both of the Whirlwind Adepts, just to trigger Temur Ascendancy.

10/26/14 Losing my dice (KTK draft 1-1 drop, Standard Jeskai aggro 2-1)

I went to Versus Games to draft today.  I signed up for a 1 pm and 4 pm draft.

P1P1:  Trail of Mystery

P2P1:  Duneblast

P3P1:  Pearl Lake Ancient over Abzan Charm.

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/2014-10-26-ktk-draft-deck/

Unfortunately, someone was forcing 5 color, so I couldn't force 5 color Trail of Mystery morphs.

Match 1:  Abzan mirror (1-0 went to time)

Game 1:

Duneblast 3 for 1, followed by Trail of Mystery making my morphs from chumps into champs, won me this game.

Game 2:

This game went to time.  My opponent had removal for all my relevant creatures, so I had to try and grind him down with Archer's Parapet.  Unfortunately, he was left at 2 life, on turn 5.

Match 2:  Mardu (0-2)

Game 1:

He killed me with the Kheru Bloodsucker + War-Name Aspirant + double Ainok Bond-Kin + Act of Treason + Rush of Battle combo.

Game 2:

I boarded into Death Frenzy for his deck.  I managed to kill 3 goblin tokens, a Ponyback Rider, and a morphed Ponyback Rider.  However, I still lost when he topdecked creatures, and I didn't draw any of my creatures.  Of course, he also "had" Arrow Storm and Arc Lightning.  Still had all deez..

It was 3:36 at this point.  I knew I was not going to be able to make my 4 pm draft at this point.  So I dropped out of the 1 pm draft (which I was playing in) and the 4 pm draft as well.  I headed over to Anime Imports to play in the 4 pm constructed event.

I played Ben Stark's Jeskai aggro list.

Match 1:  Abzan aggro (0-2)

Game 1:

I had my opponent down to 1 life, and he topdecked Sorin to gain 14 life.  Even though I killed Sorin after that, I couldn't win after that, since he had a monstrous Fleecemane Lion.

Game 2:

I tried to play the "control route" but lost to Rakshasa Deathdealer because I didn't board into Banishing Light.

I get kinda tilty after this, and leave the table.  Apparently I lost my Chessex Borealis Aquerple dice during this time.

Match 2:   Abzan midrange (2-1)

Game 1:

I mull to 4, promptly lose to double Siege Rhino.

Game 2:

I manage to win off Mantis Rider + topdeck land for double Lightning Strike.

Game 3:

This game got super grindy, between all my control spells and my opponent's removal spells.  Eventually I topdecked a Stoke the Flames for the win.

I kinda punt when my opponent plays Siege Rhino.  I have Disdainful Stroke and Nullify in hand.  I thought to save the Nullify for a Courser of Kruphix.  I counter the Rhino with Disdainful Stroke, then she plays Elspeth the next turn then +1.  EoT I use Stoke the Flames, and hope to topdeck a Mantis Rider or burn spell, which I topdeck a Mantis Rider, and kill Elspeth.   She then kills my Mantis Rider next turn, and I'm taking 3 per turn from soldier tokens for a bit.

Also, when I cast Dig Through Time, I have a choice between Brimaz, Banishing Light, and Negate.  I should have just put the Brimaz at the bottom, since there wasn't a chance I was winning through creature aggro through all the removal spells.   The Negate would have helped me protect a creature or counter another planeswalker.

Match 3:  Boros Blitz (2-0)

Game 1:

My opponent dealt 11 damage to me in one turn with Monastery Swiftspear and double Titan's Strength.  Unfortunately, I then Magma Jet'ed his only creature, and he couldn't draw another one.

Game 2:

I mull to 4, but keep a land with Seeker of the Way, two lands, and Anger of the Gods.   My opponent goes Swiftspear x 2, and takes me down to 14.  When I play Anger of the Gods, he doesn't have a way to pump his dudes, so they die.   I then play Rabblemaster next turn, and Seeker of the Way the following turn.  He plays Soldier of the Pantheon into Dragon Mantle, and I Magma Spray his Soldier in response.  He can't save his guy so I get the two for one.    Next turn when I attack all out, he Deflecting Palm's my Rabblemaster so I go from 12 to 7 life.  But then he concedes after his next draw step.

10/24/14 Rainbow bright FNM KTK draft 2-1

45 people showed up to draft at Gamescape North

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/2014-10-24-rainbow-draft-deck/

Result 2-1

10/18/14 Jeskai Skies (Game Day 3-1)

I went to Gamescape North today.  25 people showed up (which is the most I've ever seen at at a Game Day).  They decided to do only 4 rounds, no cut to single elimination rounds at all.  So only the two people who went 4-0 would be getting the playmat.

Decklist:
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/jeskai-windowscleaner/

Match 1:  Mardu midrange (2-0)

Game 1:

Opponent missed a Goblin Rabblemaster trigges.  I could assume he was just playing the Goblin Rabblemaster post combat, since he didn't say anything.  This turned out to be relevant, because I ended the game at 1 life.

I burned him out on the back of triple Jeskai Charm.

Game 2:

My opponent missed a Goblin Rabblemaster trigger again.  We have dueling Ashcloud Phoenixes, and I have a Sarkhan.  Sarkhan ends up closing out the game for me.

Match 2:  G/b Devotion (2-0)

Game 1:

My opponent plays a Doomwake Giant, but I'm able to race with Mantis Rider + Jeskai Charm.

Game 2:

Suspension Field + Disdainful Stroke does work here.

Match 3:  G/R Devotion (1-2)

Game 1:

I kinda punt this game, when my opponent plays Xenagos and has a Courser in play.  I play Stoke the Flames to kill Xenagos, then attack my opponent with Mantis Rider.  I should have used Stoke the Flames on the Courser, and kill Xenagos by attacking with Mantis Rider.  I forgot Xenagos only has 3 loyalty when he comes into play.

Game 2:

My opponent draws four Coursers this game.  I kill one with Stoke the Flames, but I can't race him gaining 3 life per turn.

Game 3:

I mull to 4, my opponent plays a turn 4 Polukranos, turn 5 Arbor Colossus.  I draw Suspension Field for the Arbor Colossus, but he plays Reclamation Sage next turn.

Match 4:  Sultai Control (2-0)

Game 1:

My opponent plays a Raksasha Deathdealer, which I nuke down with Magma Jet.

My opponent tries to race me with Sidisi, but I race him down with Sarkhan and Jeskai Charms.

Game 2:

Opponent played a couple Rakshasa Deathdealers.  Of course, I have plenty of burn to get rid of them.  I finish the game with Keranos, God of Storms.

Result:  3-1, got six booster packs, and a couple promo Utter End.

I was 5th place out of 25.  1st was Abzan, 2nd was G/r Devotion, 3rd/4th were Abzan.   So I was the highest ranked person playing Jeskai.

10/13/14 Getting the short stick (KTK 0-1 drop)

I went over to Versus Games for the 4 pm draft.

P1P1:  Bloodstained Mire

P1P2:  Crater's Claws

P2P1:   Master of Pearls

P3P1:  Windswept Heath

Unfortunately the deck ended up as a pile.  I lost my first match to a Temur deck who got Ashcloud Phoenix both games.  So I ended up leaving after round 1, so I could focus on cleaning my apartment.

10/17/14 Mambo number 5 (KTK FNM draft 2-0-1)

I went to Gamescape North for the FNM draft.  I got there kind of late because I left my wallet at home.  I had to drive home (through traffic) to go and get it, and didn't arrive until 5:45 p.m.   I ended up in a pretty tough pod, with 2 pretty experienced drafters on my right and left.

P1P1:  End Hostilities

I made a mistake taking a 2nd Leaping Master over a 2nd Swiftwater Cliffs.  I ended up not playing Red as a main color, so extra fixing would have been appreciated.

P2P1:  Alabaster Kirin over Anafenza.

I took a Kill Shot over Mystic of the Hidden Way.  I never saw another Mystic of the Hidden Way, but I did see a Kill Shot in pack 3, which I passed for Highspire Mantis.

P3P1:  Kheru Spellthief over Abzan Falconer, Jeskai Charm, and Ainok Bond-kin.  Probably a mistake, since Kheru Spellthief was pretty mediocre.

I drafted four Scaldkin during the draft (not highly mind you) but ended up not playing any of them in my main deck.

DECK
1 Dragon's Eye Savants
1 Jeskai Windscout
1 Monastery Flock
1 Mistfire Weaver
1 Kheru Spellsnatcher
1 Force Away
1 Singing Bell Strike
1 Treasure Cruise
1 Ainok Bond-Kin
1 Abzan Falconer
1 Watcher of the Roost
2 Alabaster Kirin
1 Feast of Resistance
1 Kill Shot
1 End Hostilities
1 Highspire Mantis
3 Efreet Weaponmaster
1 Ride Down
1 Master the Way
2 Swiftwater Cliffs
2 Tranquil Cove
6 Island
6 Plains
2 Mountain

SIDEBOARD

1 Jeskai Student
1 Salt Road Patrol
4 Scaldkin
1 Glacial Stalker
1 Blinding Spray
2 Leaping Master
1 Bloodfire Mentor
1 Barrage of Boulders
1 Arrow Storm
1 Kin-Tree Warden
1 Longshot Squad
1 Woolly Loxodon

Match 1:  Sultai (2-0)

Game 2:

I made a mistake by letting him tap Embodiment of Spring to sacrifice it the turn after he played it (it still has summoning sickness).  The only reason I noticed this, is because he played a second Embodiment of Spring the next turn, and I told him he couldn't tap and sacrifice it because it still has summoning sickness.

Match 2:  Abzan insane rares (1-1 draw)

Game 1:

I have to cast End Hostilities as a 2 for 2, to kill High Sentinels of Arashin.

I tried to get fancy with playing Kheru Spellthief (face down) then trying to Force Away Anafenza later, and trying to steal Anafenza with the spellthief.  Instead, he has Duneblast to 2 for 1 me.

I have to use Master the Way to kill Anafenza.   I try to block Hooting Mandrills and Shambling Attendant with morph and Efreet Weaponmaster flip, but he has Become Immense to  blow me out after blocks.  I end up losing to Hooting Mandrills.

Game 2:

I have to cast End Hostilities as a 2 for 3 (I lose 2 of my creatures, and my End Hostilities) to kill his Alabaster Kirin + High Sentinels of Arashin.

I lose my Efreet Weaponmaster to Crackling Doom.

I made a mistake by playing a morph, then not outlasting my Ainok Bond-kin so it would get flying from my Abzan falconer.  There was no reason for me to leave four mana up with my morph (my morph needed 5 to flip anyways).  Game ends up going to time, so we draw.

He also had Ivorytusk Fortress in his deck.

Match 3:    Abzan good stuff (2-1)

Game 1:

I proceed to draw 12 lands, and lose to Rakshasa Deathdealer pump to 10/10.

Game 2:

I kill Siege Rhino with Master the Way.  Wow this guy's deck is nuts.  Eventually he attacks with Rakshasa Deathdealer and plays Dragonscale Boon (for value).  I Kill Shot it, so it ends up tapped from regen, then I attack for lethal next turn thanks to Efreet Weaponmaster flip.

Game 3:

I end up winning from Watcher of the Roost, Mistfire Weaver, and Alabaster Kirin flyer aggro.

Kind of annoying, he attacked with Temur Charger and Heir of the Wilds, and said he was casting Defiant Strike to pump his Heir of the Wilds to 3/3.  I said I was going to Kill Shot the Temur Charger to prevent him from drawing the card, but he explained he was doing the Defiant Strike pre-combat (whatever).  It didnd't matter anyways, since I end up winning with flyers.

Result:  2-0-1, 4 packs

10/10/14 I will survive (FNM KTK Draft 2-1)

I went over to Gamescape North to play in the FNM KTK draft.  The turnout was lower than usual (29 people).

P1P1 Siege Rhino
P1P2 Herald of Anafenza
P1P3 Hardened Scales (speculative pick over Ruthless Ripper, ended up not playing it)
P1P4 Abzan Ascendancy

P2P1 Rattleclaw Mystic ($) over Abzan Battle Priest

P3P1 Abzan Charm over Kheru Spellsnatcher
P3P2 Necropolis Fiend over something else I needed, but man I love Necropolis Fiend

I ended up with a lot of rares in my deck, and seven outlast guys.  My other early game cards were a bit lacking (only one Archer's Parapet, no Debilitating Injury) and few morphs.   I would rate this deck a 6/10.

Match 1:  Abzan mirror (2-0)

Game 1:

My opponent plays Duneblast both games, but I manage to win the first game, and the second game stalls out because both of us got to over 30 life (I had Abzan Guide, he had Kheru Dreadmaw)

Match 2:  BG (2-0)

Game 1:

I kept a sketchy hand with all 3 colors of mana, but no plays until turn 5.  I almost die to Highland Game + Alpine Grizzly + Savage Punch for my first creature.  But I end up stabilizing and killing him with Necropolis Fiend + Abzan Ascendancy tokens.

Game 2:

This game goes to time again, but I manage to kill my opponent on turn 5, despite a slow play warning (?) from the judge.

Match 3: Jeskai good stuff (0-2)

Game 1:

I mull to 5, keep a 2 lander.  I play Archer's Parapet, my opponent has Crippling Chill and Singing Bell Strike for it.  I die to Scaldkin + Leaping master, and never draw a 3rd land.

Game 2:

I mull to 6, keep a 5 lander, Ainok Bond-kin.  I draw an Abzan Falconer.  My opponent's first play is Monastery Flock, face up.   He has Bring Low for my Abzan Falconer, and Force Away for my Ainok Bond-kin.   My opponent plays a Scaldkin, a Sage of  the Inward Eye, two Efreet Weaponmasters, and a Singing Bell Strike for my Longshot Squad.  I end up stabilizing at 2 life, but then he plays a Leaping Master and I draw Rattleclaw Mystic, instead of a reach/flying guy.

I felt like I played Game 2 pretty tight, unlike how I usually throw away my last two games of the night.  I think I was just in a good mood.

Result:  2-1

I opened Mardu Ascendancy (eww) and Hooded Hydra (shrug)

10/8/14 Getting back on the horse (KTK draft 2-1)

I went over to Versus Games to draft tonight.

P1P1:  Ivorytusk Fortress over Mer-ek Nightblade

P1P2:  I took "shiny" Longshot Squad over Kill Shot.  In retrospect, it worked out, but I think I should have actually taken the Kill Shot.

P1P3:  Debilitating Injury over a second Kill Shot.

White ended up super cut, but blue was kinda open, I saw a 5th pick Waterwhirl?  I don't think that should go that late.

P2P1:   Took Archer's Parapet over Ugin's Nexus.

P3P1:  Necropolis Fiend.

[DECK]

Black:  12
1 Ruthless Ripper
2 Krumar Bond-Kin
2 Sultai Scavenger
1 Necropolis Fiend
-----
2 Debilitating Injury
1 Bitter Revelation
2 Rite of the Serpent
1 Dead Drop

Green:
2 Archer's Parapet
1 Longshot Squad
1 Sultai Flayer
2 Sagu Archer
1 Pine Walker
1 Woolly Loxodon
-----
1 Dragonscale Boon

Black/Green
1 Kin-Tree Invocation

Lands:
1 Jungle Hollow
9 Swamp
8 Forest

Sideboard:
1 War Behemoth

2 Mardu Skullhunter
1 Kheru Dreadmaw
1 Krumar Bond-Kin
1 Rite of the Serpent

1 Bloodfire Mentor
1 Canyon Lurker
1 Shatter

1 Kin-Tree Warden
1 Highland Game
1 Smoke Teller
1 Feed the Clan
1 Scout the Borders
1 Roar of Challenge

1 Sultai Banner

1 Ivorytusk Fortress
1 Abomination of Gudul
1 Kheru Lich Lord

[/DECK]

I got passed a foil Ugin's Nexus P3P2, but I took Kin-Tree Invocation over it, since I was solidly in black/green.

Took a Kheru Lich Lord over a third Debilitating Injury.  I don't think I would play three Debilitating Injury.

I ended up getting no blue fixing (besides a Sultai banner) so I decided not to play any of my blue cards.

[DECK]

[/DECK]

Match 1:  Mardu (2-0)

Game 1:

My opponent keeps a 2 lander on the draw, doesn't have to discard anything, but doesn't play anything meaningful for the first six turns or so.

Game 2:

My opponent plays Siegecraft on a Valley Dasher.  I block his 4/6 with my Archer's Parapet, and it doesn't matter.  He then plays a Necropolis Fiend, and I have Rite of the Serpent for it.

Match 2:  RUG stuff (2-0)

Game 1:

My opponent Mindswipes one of my spells for 1, dealing me 1 damage.  What.  Then he plays Dig Through Time during his mainphase.  Huh.

My opponent has Singing Bell Strike for my Necropolis Fiend.  Ouch.  I eventually untap my fiend and remove 2 cards to give his facedown morph -2/-2.  It turned out it was Kheru Spellsnatcher.  Yikes.

Game 2:

This game goes to time.  I had won the first game, so I won the match.

Match 3:  RUG good stuff (0-2)

Game 1:

My opponent gets turn 2 Trail of Mystery, and manages to search up five lands from it.

PUNT ALERT:

My opponent played Savage Punch on his Whirlwind Adept targeting my Sultai Scavenger.  I cast Dragonscale Boon in response, making my guy a 5/5 to fight his (now) 6/4.  So it was a 2/2.  Then he attacked with his Jeskai Windscout, now a 3/2.  I failed to block with my 4/4 Longshot Squad (which had reach because it had a counter).  I said I take 3 damage, implying I didn't block.  If I had blocked, I would have killed his 3/2, saved myself 3 damage.  Next turn when I played Dead Drop, he sacrificed his Windscout, since it was now brickwalled by my 4/4 reach, and some other dorky creature.   It ultimately didn't matter because he played another Snowhorn Rider and Hooded Hydra face-down, then alpha swung next turn, so I died.

Game 2:

My opponent gets a turn 4 flip up Mystic of the Hidden Way online, and my only way of dealing with it is Dead Drop, which I can't cast.  Of course, I cast a Bitter Revelation, and end up pitching a land, and a creature.  I should have kept the land, and pitched Necrpolis Fiend instead (way too slow).   That would have let me cast Dead Drop with delve a turn earlier, and save some damage.   I play a Sultai Flayer, and he flips up Icefeather Aven EoT, to bounce my flayer to hand.

Next turn I draw a land, and can cast Dead Drop, but my opponent has Disdainful Stroke.  I casually say "you've got it all" and he disputes this, saying he only played one counterspell, but I meant his deck was insanely good compared to mine.   *shrug*  Anyways, I take my three packs and go home.

Result:  2-1, three booster packs

I seem to have misplaced the 10th common.  I don't remember what it was.

10/4/14 One does not simply walk into Modern (Saturday Modern 2-1)

I stayed up stupidly late for the second night in a row, playing Shadow of Mordor.  So I got 5 hours of sleep (again). There was a Modern tournament scheduled for Saturday at noon at Gamescape North.  I went to the tournament, and there were only 6 people who wanted to play Modern.

Match 1:  Melira Pod (2-1)

Game 1:

Won off the combo.  I kinda punt because I Gitaxian Probe my opponent, and saw he didn't have double white mana in play, but he did have Linvala in hand.  I should have tapped his white mana source during his upkeep, so that if he drew a white mana during his draw step, he couldn't slam Linvala.

I end up combo'ing off the next turn, after he taps 3 land, and I tapped his white source with Pestermite.  During my turn I play Splinter Twin.

Game 2:

I lose to Resto Angel.  I can't kill that card outside of sideboard Dismember.

Game 3:

Molten Rain into Snapcaster Mage + Molten Rain + plus my other copy of Molten Rain = opponent sad face.

Barely won this game, off Tarmogoyf + Snapcaster Mage + double Pestermite beats.

I get punished because I have Molten Rain and Pestermite in hand, and he has Noble Hierarch in play, and 3 untapped lands.  I go for Pestermite to tap his Hierach so I can swing for lethal.  He has Resto Angel to blink his Noble Hierach, giving him two untapped blockers.  If I Molten Rain'd first, then he would have to tap his dudes for Resto Angel, then I could tap Hierarch after it came back, so I could tap it down with Pestermite. I attack with all, he eats a Pestermite with Angel, chumps Tarmogoyf with Hierarch.  Then next turn I swing with just Tarmogoyf, he chumps with Angel.   The turn after that, he plays Archangel of Thune, which  he chumps with.  Then eventually he scoops.   But I gave him a bunch of extra turns to find an answer.

Match 2:  R/G Tron (0-2)

Game 1:

Opponent gets turn 1 Relic into turn 2 Spellskite.  This neuters my Tarmogoyf.  He quickly gets Karn into Eye of Ugin into Emrakul, and I lose.

Game 2:

I mull to 6, keeping a hand of Lighting Bolt,

Opponent goes turn 2 Spellskite into turn 3 Spellskite.  I should have kept in Spell Snare.  Gitaxian Probe showed me he has Boil in Hand, and double Karn, Liberated.

I punted because I didn't use my Tec Edge to kill one of his Tron pieces.   He had double Mine in play, one Power Plant, a Tower, and and had a Tower in his hand earlier (from Expedition Map).  I thought he also had a second Power Plant in hand, but it didn't matter, because he played Emrakul and wrecked me.  I got him to 2 life but it didn't matter.  I never drew any of my artifact hate/land hate besides the one Tec Edge.

Match 3:  Living End (2-0)

Game 1:

I have turn 3 Vendillion Clique to put a Violent Outburst at the bottom of his deck. He still has Demonic Dread, though.  I Cryptic Command the Demonic Dread next turn.

He takes too long to build up his GY.  By the time he does cast Demonic Dread, I counter the Living End with Remand, then burn him to death next turn.  I think he should have gone for the Demonic Dread earlier.  Maybe he was playing around Cryptic Command.

Game 2:

I'm a bit fuzzy remembering what happened during this game.

He goes turn 4 Violent Outburst, I counter with Remand.  Turn 5 Violent Outburst, I counter with another Remand I drew.  Turn 5 he hardcasts Living End, then turn 6 I decide to not hold up Snapcaster Mage/Remand, and he punishes me with a THIRD Violent Outburst.  I lose all my guys, he gets back 4 creatures.  I have to chump one to live a turn.

Ultimately, I end up winning because he had suspended a Living End earlier, and the suspended Living End ends up makes him burying his guys in play, and puts my Deceiver Exarch, Snapcaster Mage, and Tarmogoyf back into play.  I burn him with Lightning Bolt, untap an Island with Deceiver,  then Electrolyze for lethal.

Result:  2-1

Apparently they are getting rid of constructed events on Fridays.  They are choosing to only do constructed events on Saturdays, and they will all be competitive REL.  I am not super sure how I feel about that, since events at Gamescape North aren't the best-organized IMO.

Of course, someone reminded me about the bathroom incident that resulted in my game loss at the GPT.  Thanks dude.  :P

10/3/14 Staying in middle of the road, and getting squished (KTK FNM draft 2-1)

I went to Gamescape North for the KTK draft.  I left early today, getting to the store around 5:30 p.m.  I thought the store was pretty quiet but then it turned out 40 people showed up.  The event also started 30 minutes late.

P1P1:  Polluted Delta

P1P2:  Suspension Field over Ainok Bond-kin

I end up making some mistakes I think.  I took Mardu Charm 4th pick.

P2P1:  Howl of the Horde.  I think I first picked Swarm of Bloodflies over Sultai Scavenger.

I took Mardu Ascendancy in this pack over Ride Down and Mer-ek Nightblade.  Seeing as I ended up not playing the Ascendancy at all, I should just have taken the Nightblade.

P3P1:  Crackling Doom

P3P4:  Herald of Anafenza.  Wow.

I passed a couple Disowned Ancestors during the draft.  I suspected that the black/white outlast deck was not open, which made sense, because I was seeing a lot of people in black/white at the table after the draft was over.  Geez.

Match 1:  Mardu mirror 2-0

This guy didn't know what his cards did.  So it was not really a challenge.

Match 2:  Mardu mirror 0-2

Game 1:

This guy has mono-removal spells.

Lost to Arrow Storm into double Ponyback Rider into double trumpet Blast.

Game 2:

Lost to double Arrow Storm.

Match 3:  Temur big stuff

Game 1:

Ended up losing the game with 3 red cards stuck in hand, and none of my red sources.

Game 2:

I thought I might lose this game as well, but he ends up making a bunch of weird blocks/chump blocks.

Game 3:

Opponent chose to draw first, and kept a 3 lander.  He never drew any more lands.

Result:  2-1

Opened my packs, got Mardu Ascendancy + Surrak Dragonclaw

My current record with KTK limited (after the prerelease)

2-2
0-2 drop
1-2
1-2
2-1

So currently I'm going 6 out of 14 in KTK limited matches.

Third match I played against a guy with Sagu Mauler, Avalanche Tusker, Icy Blast, Thousand Winds, Jeering Instigator, Wooded Foothill (for the rub-in).

9/27/14 Punting like Ray Guy (Khans sealed 0-2 drop, Khans draft 1-2)

I went to Anime Imports today to play in the release sealed.  It was kind of an ordeal just getting to Anime Imports, because of Fog Fest, but I gradually made it to the sealed tournament.

I opened my six packs, and boy they were kinda stinky:

There was a ton of Jeskai fixing, and a few great Jeskai rares, but the commons/uncommons were lacking.

This is what I could have played:

White:  6
1 Jeskai Student
1 Master of Pearls
1 Salt Road Patrol
----
1 Rush of Battle
2 Smite the Monstrous

Blue:  9

Lands:  17
6 Mountain
6 Island
1 Mystic Monastery
2 Swiftwater Cliffs
2 Tranquil Cove

14 creatures, a lot of them being kinda bleh.  A lot of fixing but the way the spell split worked I don't like it.

This is what I ended up playing:

DECK:

Green:  11
1 Smoke Teller
1 Temur Charger
1 Alpine Grizzly
1 Longshot Squad
1 Hooting Mandrills
2 Tusked Colossodon

Match 1:  5 color good stuff (1-2)

Game 1:

Lost to Jeering Instigator taking my Tusked Colosson and killing me with it.

Game 2:

Crushed my opponent with a curve out of Alpine Grizzly, Hooting Mandrills, into double Tusked Colossodon.  Opponent showed off his Butcher of the Horde, but it wasn't enough.

Game 3:

Lost to Jeering Instigator + Archer's Parapet.

Match 2:    Sultai mirror (0-2)

Game 1:

Kinda got color screwed this game (not drawing any forests) then lost to Icy Blast with ferocious.

Game 2:

Had my opponent on the ropes for a bit, but his Mystic of the Way, plus Icy Blast and Clever Impersonator meant I couldn't win the race.  Of course, my opponent hits me with Mardu Skullhunter when I had played a land in my hand, and only had Dead Drop in hand.  Fuckme.

After that disappointing two matches, I dropped out of the sealed.  There was a draft happening at 5 pm, so I waited around for that.  I suspect I should have went over to the Fog Fest booths to get some food, but didn't think about that.

Draft fired with 10 people.

P1P1:   Wooded Foothills

P2P1:  Grim Haruspex

P3P1:   Necropolis Fiend

I picked Smite the Monstrous over Despise.

I was a litle worried with how this draft would go in terms of fixing but ended up getting 2 fixer lands in pack 3, including a last pick Bloodfell Caves.

Deck:

Black: 13
2 Disowned Ancestor

Artifact:  1
1 Witness of the Ages

Lands: 3
1 Dismal Backwater
1 Tranquil Cove
1 Wooded Foothill

Match 1:   Sultai splashing white (2-0)

Game 1:

Turn 2 Ainok Bond-kin into Turn 3 Watcher of the Roost into turn 4 Salt Road Patrol is pretty good.

Game 2:

This game my opponent had Sidisi, Brood Tyrant, Mystic of the Way and Abomination of Gudul.

However, I got Ainok Bond-kin with Mer-Ek Nightblade + Swarm of Bloodflies.    I killed the Mystic of the Way with Rite of the Serpent, then killed the Abomination of Gudul by blocking it with my Watcher of the Roost and using Feat of Resistance on it, giving it a +1/+1 counter.

Match 2:  Abzan (0-2)

Game 1:

I mull to 5, and My opponent just crushes me with Tuskguard Captain and Ainok-Bond Kin.

Game 2:

I lost this game because my opponent hit me with Rakshasa's Secret when I have 4 cards in hand.  I end up discarding my Smite the Monstrous and Feat of Resistance, keeping Highspire Mantis and Necropolis Fiend.  I should have discarded the Highspire Mantis, because I end up losing the game to double Abzan Guide + Tusked Colossodon + Abzan charm on one of the Abzan Guides..  Having Smite the Monstrous would have made my life a lot easier.

Match 3:

My opponent's playing standard with a friend of his, who I remembered from Versus Games.  I think his friend was one of the employees at Versus Games because I remember buying some cards from him at the counter.

Game 1:

My opponent mulls to 5, but it doesn't matter, because he draws all the lands he needs.   My opponent gets like 9 damage off his  3/4 Tuskguard Captain.

The next turn he attacks with 3/4 Tuskguard Captain, a Sultai Scavenger he stole from me (thanks to Kheru Spellthief) and a 5/5 Snowhorn Rider.  I block his Snowhorn Rider with my Grim Haruspex and Ainok Bond-kin, and the Sultai Scavenger with my Watcher of the Roost.  He plays Dragonscale Boon on his Snowhorn Rider, and I respond with Throttle.  Unfortunately, I don't have 7 mana, so I can't play Feat of Resistance to save my Watcher of the Roost.

I was at 5 life and my opponent was at 6.  I end up swinging with my 3/2 Grim Harsupex and my 3/2 Ainok Bond-kin and leaving myself DOB because I play Necropolis Fiend before combat, instead of just playing Necropolis Fiend and staying back, or playing two other cheap creatures in my hand.  I think my exhaustion was finally catching up to me.

Also, I missed a Grim Haruspex card draw trigger when my Watcher of the Roost died.

Game 2:

This game was a bit closer, but I win due to Swarm of Bloodflies, Highspire Mantis, and Ainok Bond-Kin.

Game 3:

I mull to 5, and my opponent curves out with Savage Knuckleblade into Morph into Morph into Bear's Companion.  What can I do?

Result:   1-4 today in limited.

Maybe I don't understand Khans of Tarkir limited at all.  Oh well.

9/26/14 Trials and Tribulations (FNM Khans of Tarkir draft 2-2)

Gamescape North was doing Friday sealed.  I wasn't feeling like playing at the Friday sealed, mainly because there are SO many freaking people who go to Gamescape now.  After how dehydrated I got at  the prerelease, I didn't feel like playing there if was going to be packed to the gills with people.  Also Khans of Tarkir sealed is super slow, and not interesting to me.

I went to Two Cats Comics to draft.  I bought a box of Khans of Tarkir to be nice, even though I can't actually afford to spend that much money on packs of cards.

P1P1:  Anafenza was the rare.  Abzan Falconer and Incremental Growth was in the pack as well.  Taking Anafenza was kind of a trap.
P2P1:  Bloodstained Mire was the rare.  Had to pass a Murderous Cut.
P2P2:  I took Murderous Cut over End Hostilities.  Maybe that was wrong.
P3P1:  Icy Blast was the rare.

Tough choices:
Drafted Longshot Squad over a second Abzan Battle Priest
Drafted Tuskguard Captain over Ainok Bond-kin
Drafted Seeker of the Way over Abzan Charm

I passed Flying Crane Technique in pack 2, which sucked.  I suspect I should have just been drafting Jeskai the whole time, since blue seemed kinda open and there were a few white cards coming through as well.  Red was a little weak, though.  I think I could have made a decent blue/white deck just splashing red, though.

Turned out the guy on my right (who went 4-0) was in Sultai, splashing white, so that's why my colors seemed cut. I knew I was gonna get hurt because I passed Abzan Falconer and Incremental Growth.

The draft got screwed up during pack 2, because someone stacked two piles of cards together AND took an extra card from a pile.

For some reason I drafted the Witness of the Ages even though I don't think that card is actually good in draft.  In drafts you should be able to get better than a 4/4 for 6, unless you're playing mostly red creatures (the black delve creatures can beat a 4/4 ground guy).

I think I messed up on the drafting base, because I ended up black/white with too many green cards (7 cards that require green mana, actually).

Black:  4

1 Mystic Monastery
1 Bloodstained Mire

Match 1:   Abzan (2-0)

This guy wasn't in my draft pod

Game 1:

I curved out with Seeker of the Way into Anafenza into

Game 2:

The board state gets a bit complex, with my opponent getting out a Mer-Ek Nightblade, a Kin-Tree Warden, a Sage-Eye Harrier, and a Swarm of Bloodflies.  Of course, I'm gaining life like crazy thanks to my Abzan Battle Priest, my Abzan Guide, and my Armament Corps.   I topdeck a Rite of the Serpent to kill his Bloodflies and swing for lethal.  My opponent gets salty because I topdecked.

Match 2:   Sultai splashing white (0-2)

This guy was on my right

This is the guy who was annoying to me during a BNG/THS/THS draft, and kinda hyper-aggressive to me during a JOU/BNG/THS draft.  Bleargh.

Game 1:

I kept 3 lands on the play.  Proceeded to not draw any more land until I died.

Game 2:

Mulled to 5, similarly got mana screwed, but managed to make this game last longer, until I died from 4/5 flyers.

I suspect my second round opponent was drawing cards when I wasn't looking, because he always had at least four cards in hand.  One turn, he ended with four cards, then next turn I saw him play a card, and he had five cards in hand.   Of course, my second round opponent ended up going 4-0 at the end.

Match 3:  Black/white aggro (2-0)

My opponent was a young kid.  I think he may have been in my draft pod.

Game 1:

Opponent said his deck was really good.  He proceeded to play turn 1 Mardu Hateblade into turn 2 Lens of Clarity. Ok.

He proceeded to play like three Kill Shot, but it doesn't matter, because my creatures are way better than his.

Game 2:

I was beating my opponent, and then he asked me for a draw.  I told him it was too late.  Then he started pretending to cry.  I said it was far too late for him to ask for a draw.

Match 4:   Sultai (0-2)

This guy was definitely not in my draft pod.

Game 1:

I kept a 2 lander on the draw.  Proceeded to lose to turn 2 Jeskai Elder, where he looted 6 cards off it.  Singing Bell Strike wrecked me.

When he attacked into my 2/3 Mardu Hordechief with his 1/2, I don't think I should have snap called him.  I should have waited until I had mana up for Feat of Resistance, because of course he had the +3/+3 pump.

Game 2:

This game ended up dragging out.  I had to use my removal spells on his double Jeskai Windscout, then use Smite the Monstrous on his 4/5 Bellowing Saddlebrute.  Then I popped my Suspension Field on his 3/3 flyer, instead of using it on his 2/3 Outlast guy.  I end up dying to the 2/3 Outlast guy, after he pumped it 4 times.  (Actually, I died to the fact that my opponent was playing SUPER SLOW, so there was no chance I could win game 2).

Double Singing Bell Strike worked well against me, because of all my Outlast guys.

Result:  2-2

It was 10:40 by the time the tournament was over.  I felt awful because the reason I didn't go to the Gamescape North sealed is because I didn't think it would be over until 11:30 p.m.  But then I ended up not getting home from Two Cats until 11:15 p.m., which wasn't much difference.

I just realized that if I'm avoiding Gamescape North and Versus Games because I think there are douchebags who play there, that I'm going to run into annoying people everywhere I go.   So what's the point of driving extra distance to play against annoying people when I could just stick with Gamescape North and Versus Games.

Also drafting at Two Cats means dealing with cross-pod pairings (ugh) and four rounds of draft (also crappy).

Green has lots of fatties (3 Siege Wurm, 1 Phytotitan, 1 Kalonian Twingrove).   It also has Chord of Calling for Value.

Red has Cone of Flame, and a bunch of two drops.

White has Triplicate Spirits, double Sancitfied Charge, a Paragon of New Dawns, a couple two drops, and some auras.

Here's what I started with:   GREEN RED

Green: 10

2 Elvish Mystic
1 Netcaster Spider
1 Reclamation Sage (maindeck meh)
1 Kalonian Twingrove
1 Phytotitan
3 Siege Wurm
-----
1 Chord of Calling (for value)

Artifact:  4
1 Bronze Sable
1 Gargoyle Sentinel
2 Will-Forged Golem

Red:  9
1 Borderland Marauder
2 Generator Servant
1 Altac Bloodseeker
1 Rummaging Goblin
1 Goblin Roughrider
1 Kurkesh, Onakke Ancient
-----
1 Crowd's Favor
1 Cone of Flame

To be honest, the Rummaging Goblin in this deck could just be Brawler's Plate, or Blastfire Bolt, or Might Makes Right.  This is actually the sort of deck where Might Makes Right would actually proc, since it has double Will-Forged Golem, triple Siege Wurm, Phytotitan, and Kalonian Twingrove.

Meteorite is also a possibility too, since it ramps.  But we already have Generator Servants for ramping.

GREEN/WHITE

Green: 10

2 Elvish Mystic
1 Netcaster Spider
1 Kalonian Twingrove
1 Phytotitan
3 Siege Wurm
-----
1 Chord of Calling (for value)

Artifact: 3
1 Bronze Sable
2 Will-Forged Golem

White:  10

1 Selfless Cathar
2 Oreskos Swiftclaw
1 Midnight Guard
1 Warden of the Beyond (meh)
1 Paragon of New Dawns
-----
1 Devouring Light
1 Marked by Honor
2 Sanctified Charge
1 Triplicate Spirits

The Paragon of New Dawns is mainly there to buff Triplicate Spirits.  The Warden of the Beyond is kinda meh in a deck with only one exile effect, but it's there.

I dropped the Gargoyle Sentinel from this version of this deck, and added a miser's Marked by Honor.  Marked by Honor on a Siege Wurm seems nice.
