8/23/14 The Heat is On (M15 draft, 2-1)

I didn't get much sleep last night.  I went to bed around 2 am, and woke up at 8 am.  I couldn't sleep in any longer.

I went over to Versus Games to get some M15 practice before the GPT M15 sealed at D20 games on Sunday morning.

Deck:

P1P1:  Chandra, Pyromaster.  DING

P2P1:  Took Juggernaut over Altac Bloodseeker and Battlefield Forge.

P2P3:  Got passed a Spirit Bonds.  Huh.

P2P8:  Got passed a Preeminent Captain.  I know it's not that good in draft, but really.

P3P1:   Took Haunted Platemail over Stoke the Flames.

P3P4:   Took Triplicate Spirits over Lightning Strike

I make a mistake and pick a 3rd Goblin Roughrider over 1st Scrapyard Mongrel, forgetting I had Juggernaut and Haunted Platemail.  I end up getting passed two more Goblin Roughriders.

1 Might Makes Right

Green:

----
1 Hunter's Ambush

Only 13 creatures, but Triplicate Spirits makes 3 Spirit Tokens, and Spirit Bonds can generate Spirit tokens if I have more nontoken creatures to play.   I could have probably dropped the Marked by Honor for a creature full time.

I think it was wrong to not play the Rummaging Goblin over Marked by Honor.  There were plenty of times I flooded out and having a filter card would have helped.   My first and second match were pretty grindy.

Match 1:  GB Dredge (2-1)

Game 1:

I won this game because my opponent didn't block my Razorfoot Griffin with his Carrion Crow.  He was at 9 life, I was attacking with a 4/2 Krenko's Enforcer and a Razorfoot Griffin, he was tapped out (mana).  I then cast Sanctified Charge for lethal.

Game 2:

Lost to Will-Forged Golem + Siege Wurm.

Game 3:

Won because my opponent didn't get any black mana.  I played Chandra, Pyromaster into Sungrace Pegasus with Inferno Fist and Krenko's Enforcer.  I exiled Triplicate Spirits with Chandra and closed the game out with Sanctified Charge.

Match 2:  UB Bounce (1-2)

Game 1:

I get turn 2 Spirit Bonds, but this game ends up super grindy anyways, with my opponent having a ton of bounce spells, plus an Accursed Spirit with Eternal Thirst.  I manage to draw into Inferno Fist to kill his Accursed Spirit.  Then he bounces my Spirit Bonds with Void Snare and plays Illusory Angel.  I quadruple block the Angel with 4 spirit tokens.  He gets a Blood Host up to 5/5 with sacrificing (including sacrificing a Black Cat during my draw step to make me discard a Paragon of Fierce Defiance).   Eventually I win off flying creatures, though.

Game 2:

I killed his Blood Host with Heat Ray, then lost to Shadowcloak Vampire + Eternal Thirst cheese.

Game 3:

I got an early beat with Borderland Marauder, but my opponent played turn 2 Bronze Sable (which I killed with Inferno Fist) and turn 3 Coral Barrier.  I wasted my Heat Ray killing his Coral Barrier when he double-blocked.  Of course, then turn 5 he plays Shadowcloak Vampire, into turn 8 Shadowcloak Vampire.  I get Spirit Bonds online but it's not enough.

This game ended up going to time.  I end up conceding turn 4 because he had me DOB.

Match 3:  UG Ensoul (2-1)

Game 1:

I manage to beat him down with flyers/Krenko's Enforcer, despite the fact that he has Void Snare and Frost Lynx.  I Inferno Fist his Paragon of Gathering Mists and Heat Ray his Amphin Pathmage.

Game 2:

Kept a sketchy hand, my first play was Paragon of Fierce Defiance.  I had Chandra in hand as well but it didn't matter.

My opponent played turn 2 Sacred Armory into turn 3 Ensoul Artifact.  Ugh.

Game 3:

I open with Borderland Marauder into Midnight Guard into Forge Devil to kill his Bronze Sable.  He plays Into the Void bouncing two of my guys.  I play a Spirit Bonds into Goblin Roughrider kicking for a spirit token.   I manage to kill him before he's able to draw into Aetherspouts (thank god).

Result:  2-1 in matches, 5-3 in games.  2 booster packs.

I think I should have played another creature, and it probably should have been Rummaging Goblin.  I was trying to not play any 1 toughness guys (besides Triplicate Spirit tokens) to avoid Forge Devil blowouts.

Match 1:   RW 1-2

This was the guy I lost against in the prerelease because of Spectra Ward, and because he "killed' me when I was at 1 life.

Game 1:

He played turn 3 Rabblemaster.  I was able to kill it with Inferno Fist.  Then he played Generator Servant->Scuttling Doom Engine.  I double blocked it and took 6 damage.  Then he played Spectra Ward.

Game 2:

This was a grindy game, where he played Rabblemaster and Doom Engine AGAIN, but he traded his Rabblemaster for 2 of my creatures,, and I cast Solemn Offering on the Doom Engine.  I eventually won off of Hoarding Dragon into Burning Anger.

Game 3:

My opponent plays turn 3 Rabblemaster AGAIN but I kill it with Heat Ray.

I decided to play Midnight Guard instead of Paragon of Fierce Defiance or Brood Keeper.  My opponent punished me by playing Generator Servant into Scuttling Doom Engine.  The game goes into extra turns, then he topdecks Spectra Ward on turn 4 to kill me.  So lucky.

Match 2:  UB 2-0

Game 1:

Early aggression with Torch Fiend into Goblin Roughrider into Marked by Honor on my Goblin Roughrider Paragon of Fierce Defiance.  He sort of stabilizes with Frost Lynx into Encrust on my Goblin Roughrider, into Jorubai Murk Lurker. But I win off Raise the Alarm and swing for lethal while he was tapped out.

Game 2:

I almost have my opponent dead with Hoarding Dragon and Paragon of Fierce Defiance and Triplicate Spirits tokens, but my opponent stabilizes with Encrust on my Hoarding Dragon, and Jorubai Murk Lurker to gain a bunch of life off his Chasm Skulker.  Then he plays a Scuttling Doom Engine (jeez) and goes up to 21 life because of the Lurker.

I manage to kill him in turn 4 of extra turns thanks to Burning Anger.

Match 3:  WG 2-0

Game 1:

ON THE PLAY, my opponent plays turn 1 Elvish Mystic, turn 2 Sunblade Elf, into turn 3 Paragon of Eternal Wilds.  I eventually kill the Paragon and the Sunblade Elf with Inferno Fists.  Then the game gets super grindy with my opponent playing Wall of Mulch and Wall of Essence and a bunch of lifegain, culminating in gaining 22 life from Congregate (because I had two Raise the Alarm and one Triplicate Spirits tokens in play).

I eventually kill him, despite him Pillar of Light'ing my Boonweaver Giant enchanted with Burning Anger.  He plays a Phytotitan but it doesn't matter now, since I am attacking for 11 in the air with my fliers (Hoarding Dragon, Geist of the Moors, 3 Spirit tokens).

Game 2:

I play turn 1 Selfless Cathar into turn 2 Inferno Fist, bashing for 3.  Then he plays turn 3 Wall of Essence.  I play my Midnight Guard.  Then next turn I play a Sacred Armory, and an Oreskos Swiftclaw.  I make a lrge Midnight Guard with Inferno Fist and Burning Anger, and he plays Oppresive Rays on my Guard.  The game gets super grindy at this point, with my opponent playing Shaman of Spring into Divine Favor.  Then he starts playing stuff like Phytotitan and Kalonian Twingrove.  I end up burning through his creatures, and finally kill him with Burning Anger.  Geez.

Result:  2-1 in matches, 5-1 in games.  2 booster packs.

I probably missed like 10 Midnight Guard triggers off my opponent's creatures in game 2.

Midnight Guard + Burning Anger or Sacred Armory + Burning Anger is a good combo.

There was a guy two seats to my right drafting all the BR rares.  That guy went 0-2 drop.

Match 1:  RW 2-0

Game 1:

Killed my opponent with Stab Wound on Midnight Guard.

Game 2:

My opponent tried to block my 4/4 Kird Chieftain with Oreskos Swiftclaw, and then use Crowd's Favor.  I had 5 mana to pump my Chieftain to 6/6.  So he died.

I got accidentally paired down at the beginning of round 2.  I had to talk to the TO and tell him that I won my first match and that my round 2 opponent had lost his first match.  I ended up getting paired against one of the people who drew.

Match 2:  GW 1-2

Game 1:

I "curve" out into Kird Chieftain into Shadowcloak Vampire into Paragon of Open Graves.  My opponent compliments me for topdecking a Forge Devil to kill his Toxivc Sliver.

Game 2:

Lost to Triplicate Spirits into Sanctified Charge

Game 3:

Lost to turn 2 Spirit Bonds into Sanctified Charge.

This guy ended up proceeding to go 2-0-1 (1st place).

Match 3:  GW 0-2

Game 1:

Opponent got out turn 3 Yisan.  For some reason I decided to sandbag creatures and just play Kird Chieftain, while my opponent would hopefully overextend, while I played Perilous Vault.   Of course, my opponent has maindeck Pillar of Light, even though I only have two targets for it (Kird Chieftain with forest, and Nightfire Giant with mountain).   I stumbled on mana, and did my math wrong, and died since I couldn't play Vault and live to untap.

Game 2:

Opponent got out turn 4 Yisan.  I had a removal spell this time.  It didn't matter, because I proceeded to draw NINE lands in a row (not kidding).    He beats me to death with Phytotitan and Seraph of the Massses.

This guy ended up proceeding to go 2-0-1 (second place).

So apparently the draft pod had enough people to support three GW drafters.

Result:  1-2

What a miserable night.

Also earlier, there was a guy asking me if I had any trades.  He looks through my binder and asks why I have Blood Baron of Vizkopa in my binder, since the value was gone way down.   He sighs because he says he can't find what he's looking for.  Then I ask him what he's looking for.  He says he wants Burning-Tree Emissary and Stoke the Flames.  I tell him I have Burning-Tree Emissary in my binder, then he criticizes me for putting Burning-Tree Emissary in my binder, because he thinks they are worthless.  I trade him 4 Burning-Tree Emissary for 2 Yavimaya Coasts, but I end up feeling really annoyed because why the fuck is this guy making fun of the cards in my binder, when he's the one who needs the cards for a standard tournament at 7 p.m.  Geez.

8/16/14 Punished for my Insolence (WMCQ 1-4)

I played the William Jensen B/W control list, but I made these modifications:

Maindeck:

-1 Banishing Light
+1 Ultimate Price

Sideboard:
-2 Last Breath
-1 Doom Blade
+ Nyx-Fleece Ram
+1 Drown in Sorrows

I got very little sleep before this tournament.  I went to bed around 11:45 p.m, but woke up six times.  I got out of bed around 7 am, then left the house around 8:50 a.m.  I got to the Oakland Convention Center at 9:30 a.m.  However, the tournament ended up not starting until 10:30 a.m.

Match 1:  UR Ensoul Artifact 0-2

Game 1:

I play a turn 2 Pack Rat into turn 3 Lifebane Zombie.  This was probably a mistake.  I think I should have gone all-in on Pack Rat.

I try to Banishing Light his Darksteel Citadel but I forget I can't do that.  Instead of trying to Banishing Light his Ensoul Artifact, I just sheepishly take the card back into hand.  I take 5 damage, then next turn I go to Banishing Light his Ensoul Artifact.

Lost to double Chief Engineer into turn 4 Scuttling Doom Engine.  I manage to double block two of his Scuttling Doom Engines to kill them (first time Blood Baron + Lifebane Zombie, second time two 3/3 Pack Rats).

Game 2:

I keep a hand with Caves of Kolios, Plains, Mutavault, two Devour Flesh, Blood Baron of Vizkopa, Underworld Connections.  I proceed to draw:  Obzedat, Ghost Council, Elspeth, Sun's Champion, two Hero's Downfall, another Underworld Connections.   I end up discarding one of my Underworld Connections.  My opponent ends up discarding Soul of New Phyrexia, but then he plays Ensoul Artifact on his Ratchet Bomb and his Darksteel Citadel again, then finishes me off with Shrapnel Blast.

Match 2:  GW Aggro 0-2

This guy was an angry neckbeard stereotype.  I will stop there lest I say too much.

Game 1:

My opponent overruns me with Sunblade Elf, double Soldier of the Pantheon, double Experiment One.  I have a Blood Baron in hand turn 5 but it won't matter, since I still die after lifelink is taken into account.

Game 2:

I played a couple of Drown in Sorrows, but for low value, since my opponent is drawing his "Fat" creatures now.  I kill a Voice of Resurgence the first time, then kill a Boon Satyr/VoR token the next time around.  Which is basically a 0.5 for 1, then a 1.5 for 1.

I lose this game because I forget my opponent has Banishing Light.  I play a Lifebane Zombie, see my opponent drew a Nissa, Worldwaker.   I Doom Blade his Loxodon Smiter and hold my Lifebane Zombie back, forgetting about the Banishing Light.  I should have not played the Lifebane Zombie and just used the Deicide in my hand to kill Boon Satyr.  But it wouldn't have mattered since once he played Nissa, Worldwaker I was doomed.

Match 3:  UWR Control 2-0

Game 1:

I played around Counterspells, and played an Underworld Connection when my opponent was tapped out.

I Thoughtseized my opponent before combat, took his Elspeth, then said "go ahead".  I meant to say "ok now I move to attacks" but my opponent took this to mean "untap and draw a card".  I wanted him to back up but then he called a judge.  I tried to explain that I meant I wanted to go to attacks, then the judge asked me if I wrote down all the cards in my opponent's hand, which I said I did, then the judge wanted to give my opponent a warning for drawing a card.  I then said I was fine with skipping the rest of my turn, because I didn't want my opponent to get a warning, especially when we were both out of contention anyways.   He Detention Sphere'd my Elspeth the next turn, which sucked, since I missed out on 5 damage (from Mutavault attack and 3 soldiers attacking) plus getting 3 more soldiers.   I ended up drawing another Elspeth, which I was able to play with 2 mana up, so he couldn't Syncopate me ( I saw he had this in his hand.  After drawing his next card, he scooped.

Game 2:

This game played out similarly to the first one.  I managed to resolve an Underworld Connections when my opponent was tapped out.

Match 4:   Rabble Red (0-2)

Game 1:

I keep a hand with double Thoughtseize and double Underworld Connections, Lifebane Zombie.  Lose to Rabblemaster and slowroll Stoke the Flames.

Game 2:

Opponent kills me with EOT Skullcrack, then Burning-Tree Emissary into Stoke the Flames into Lightning Strike.  Great.

Match 5:  Naya Hexproof (0-2)

My opponent was mopey mcmoperson.  A truly miserable person to interact with.

Game 1:

My opponent built a 7/7 lifelink trample flying Gladecover Scout.  I wish I had more Devour Flesh in my deck.

Game 2:

My opponent played a Witchstalker and Gladecover Scout.   I played an Obzedat, and didn't blink it out, thinking I could hold off my opponent.  Then he suited up his Witchstalker with Madcap Skills and Ethereal Armor.  I attacked with my Obzedat next turn.  Then I had the option of playing Elspeth and making soldier tokens, or destroying my Obzedat and his Witchstalker.  I chose the latter (ugh).  Elspeth died to his Gladecover Scout next turn.

Then he played an Ajani, Mentor of Heroes, then found a Voice of Resurgence off it.    That eventually resulted in my death.

I quit playing in the tournament after this point.  I'm just way too tired at this point.

I wish I had more Devour Flesh in the deck.  Also I think I should have kept the Last Breath in the sideboard, since I ran into Voice of Resurgence in two matches.

I wish there was a good defensive 3-drop for black/white like Courser of Kruphix.  I guess the closest thing is Brimaz.  I'm not sure if it's possible to play Brimaz in a deck with 13 white sources.

In a way, I'm glad I didn't do well in the tournament because Round 5 ended around 4 pm (for me).  I don't think I could have lasted until midnight (for 5 more Rounds, and a top 8).

8/15/14 Sleep is for the weak (Modern FNM 4-0)

I went to the store to play Modern tonight, instead of going to bed earlier.

This is the decklist I played:

http://www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=7905&d=245457&f=MO

I had not played Junk before but was interested in playing a deck that was not Splinter Twin.  I didn't have Melira Pod finished since I needed to get two more Noble Hierarch and a Linvala.

Match 1:  GW Heroic 2-0

Game 1:

She gets a Bow of Nylea in play third turn, but it doesn't matter,  I end up removing all her creatures with Abrupt Decay or Maelstrom Pulse.  She gets an Ajani, Caller of the Pride out, but I kill it with Tarmogoyf and a Spirit token.  She plays Fleecemane Lion into Forced Adapation, and I kill the Fleecemane Lion with Abrupt Decay.

Game 2:

I pick away Ajani, Caller of the Pride with Thoughtseize.  She plays Fleecemane Lion into Forced Adaptation, and I kill the Fleecemane Lion with Abrupt Decay.  She ends up getting stuck on three mana and I kill her with Tarmogoyf.

Match 2:  Mono-black Vampire 2-0

Game 1:

He played a Kalastria Blood Witch and Vampire Nocturnus.  I had to kill the Blood Witch with Dismember.  Next turn I Abrupt Decay'd his Tormented Soul, then played Liliana of the Veil and made him sacrifice a creature.  Once he was down to topdecks, I dragged out a win.

Game 2:

I get a 2 for 1 off Maelstrom Pulse, killing two Guul Draz Vampires.

Got down to 3 life, but I managed to resolve Scavenging Ooze and gain a bunch of life.

Match 3:  Burn 2-0

Game 1:

He gets me down to 12 life burning me.

He plays a Reforge the Soul, and I discard two Dark Confidant.  Of course I draw another Dark Confidant and a Thoughtseize and some lands. He has me near dead playing two Vexing Devil and a Chandra's Pheonix.  I have two Tarmogoyfs and a Stirring Wildwood in play.  I Abrupt Decay one Vexing Devil and attack.  He decides to double block my

Game 2:

I get a 2 for 1 off Maelstrom Pulse, killing two Satyr Firedancer.

I end up getting down to 5 life, but Scavenging Ooze brings me back.  I mess up by activating Ooze twice and he responds with Searing Blood, forcing me to pop my Verdant Catacombs to get a basic forest instead of getting a Temple Garden which would have let me play the Timely Reinforcements in my hand.   If I had put the Temple Garden into play untapped he could have responded with Lightning Bolt to kill me.  It ends up not mattering because he never draws any more burn, and I stay in the game with 8 life.

Match 4:  UR Guttersnipe 2-0

Game 1:

I Abrupt Decay'd his Guttersnipe.   He Mizzium Mortar'd my first Scavenging Ooze, but then I play a second Ooze.  Then I get some Tarmogoyf actinon going.

Resolved Liliana of the Veil too stronk.

Game 2:

Turn 2 Thoughtseize, I took away his Rune Snag.  Left him with Guttersnipe and Cryptic Command.  Tectonic Edge and Fulminator Mage keep him off four mana.

Resolved Liliana of the Veil too stronk.

Result:  4-0 in matches, 8-0 in games.  12 booster packs, Bile Blight promo, and a WPN event reporter advertisement card.  I give the advertisement card to someone who asks for it.  *shrug*

8/9/14 Why do I do this to myself? (M15 Game Day 0-2 drop, M15 draft 2-1)

I went to bed around 1:30 am last night.  Stupid Bravely Default being insanely addictive.  I woke up twice during the night.  I decided to take BW midrange/control to Game Day M15, even though it was disappointing during Game Day Journey to Nyx.  I wake up late, and don't even have time to eat much food before the tournament.

Match 1:  RDW (1-2)

Played against the store employee.

Game 1:

Kept a hand of 4 lands, Underworld Connections, Desecration Demon, Blood Baron of Vizkopa.  Died to 2/2's with multiple pump spells.

Game 2:

Played a few removal spells, opponent got flooded.

Game 3:

Kept a 2 land hand with 3 two mana removal spells, 2 Blood Baron.   Died to Firefist Striker + two pump spells.  Great.

Match 2:  Brave Naya (1-2)

Played against a Magic Online grinder.

Game 1:

Won off turn 2 Pack Rat.

Game 2:

Opponent kills me with topdeck Ajani, Caller of the Pride.

Game 3:

Opponent plays Ajani, Caller of the Pride again, and I have no way to kill it in hand.

Result:   Dejectedly, I drop from the tournament at 0-2, and go home to get lunch.  I sign up for an M15 draft at Versus Games.

The Versus Games draft is stuck at 5 people for a while.  Which is worrisome since it was a 30 minute drive to Versus Games.  I consider going to Anime Imports to draft but I don't really want to drive 20 minutes to Pacifica right now.   Anyways, it ends up filling up around 4:30 p.m.

P1P1:  I took Kalonian Twingrove into a pack with Flesh to Dust, Netcaster Spider, and Welkin Tern.

I end up not getting much green in this pack. Abandon SHIP.

P2P1:  I took Stoke the Flames over Yavimaya Coast.

I passed Roaring Primadox, missing out on possible Roaring Primadox + Frost Lynx value.

P3P1:  I took Heat Ray over Indulgent Tormentor.

I passed two Ancient Silverback in this pack.  Eww.

I passed took first Krenko's Enforcer over second Quickling.

1 Carnivorous Moss-Beast
1 Siege Wurm

Artifact:
1 Bronze Sable
----
1 Tyrant's Machine

Land:
1 Radiant Fountain

Match 1:  BG 2-0

Game 1:

Opponent plays a Stab Wound on my Scrapyard Mongrel, then deploys a Black Rat and Wall of Mulch.  It doesn't matter since I have 5 attacks anyways and Frost Lynx/Kapsho Kitefins to tap it down.

Game 2:

This game pretty much plays the same as the first one.

Match 2:   UW 2-0

Game 1:

My opponent plays an Ajani's Pridemate with Divine Favor.  Meet Void Snare.  Frost Lynx + Quickling gains VALUE.

Game 2:

My opponent plays an Oreskos Swiftclaw with Divine Favor.  Meet Chronostutter.

The turn before I swing for lethal with Generator Servant sacrifice into Kapsho Kitefins, my opponent plays Polymorphist's Jest BEFORE attacks.  If he played it after attacks he could have eaten two of my creatures. Anyways, he ends up losing to my topdeck Frost Lynx for DOUBLE TAP value (with Kapsho Kitefins trigger).

Match 3:  BR (1-2)

Game 1:

I beat my opponent by tempo'ing him out with Frost Lynx/Kapsho Kitefins.

Game 2:

Mind Rot wrecks me, as I had the kill next turn with sacrifice Inferno Fist into Stoke the Flames.  Then my opponent top decks Covenant of Blood two turns later to gain life and eventually gains card quality advantage with Rummaging Goblin.

Game 3:

Long grindy game.  I encrust my opponent's Accursed Spirit, then Heat Ray the second one.   Cruel Sadist + Altac Bloodseeker wombo combo wrecks me though.

I end up not playing the Inferno Fist in my hand, wanting to play around Ulcerate and Heat Ray and Flesh to Dust.  I think I should have sided this out for Glacial Crasher.

8/8/14 Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory but still #winning (FNM standard 3-0)

I took the William Jensen/Owen Turtenwald B/W midrange/control deck to Anime Imports for the 4 pm weekly standard.

Match 1:  2-0  (BG constellation)

Game 1:

Opponent mulls to 5, he plays a Tormented Hero, but not much else.  Turn 2 Pack Rat takes over the game and he scoops.

Game 2:

I thoughtseize turn 1, find out my opponent's playing BG constellation.  I make him discard Pharika.  Then he plays Tormented Hero into Brain Maggot into (unbestowed) Spiteful Returned, Eidolon of Blossoms which I kill right away, then Grim Guardian.  I end up grinding him out of the game with Desecration Demon.

Match 2:  2-0 (UWR control/burn)

Game 1:

Opponent mulls to 4, I play a Desecration Demon turn 4, he dies.

Game 2:

This game was a bit closer.  But timely discard spells + careful play on my part (to avoid celestial flare) end up winning the game for me.

Match 3:  2-1  (BW Midrange)

I got paired down, my opponent was 1-1.

Game 1:

I lost game 1 to turn 2 pack rat.

Game 2:

I somehow manage to throw away Pack Rat, Bile Blight AND Devour Flesh away in one turn, but it doesn't matter since I get all THREE of my Blood Baron of Vizkopa online so he dies.  I tried to throw away this game so hard but it didn't matter.

Game 3:

This game gets crazy, when my opponent reveals Perilous Vault and Blood Baron of Vizkopa to Thoughtseize.  I make him discard the Blood Baron, because I wanted to play around him topdecking his own Thoughtseize to make me discard my Lifebane Zombie.

He beats me down a bit with a Lifebane Zombie of his own.  He chump attacks his Zombie into my Blood Baron, not realizing Blood Baron can block Lifebane Zombie.

I end up getting Elspeth and Blood Baron online.  My opponent plays his Perilous Vault, killing them both.   Then it becomes an attrition war with my Underworld Connections vs. his Underworld Connections.  He goes down to 2 life, and then plays an Elspeth.  I draw Bile Blight off Underworld Connections, kill his Soldier tokens.  I attack with two mutavaults, he only has two mutavaults untapped, so he can only block one of my mutavaults.  NumotGAME.

Result:  3-0, 6-1 in games, 20 dollars store credit.

I don't know why I was playing so poorly in Game 2.  I blame it on only eating 600 calories worth of food the entire day.

They did a Scars of Mirrodin block draft for 30 dollars after the standard tournament, but I left to go home and eat.

8/4/14 All the rares but none of the luck (M15 draft 0-2 drop)

P1P1:  Took Siege Dragon over Devouring Light and Lightning Strike.  There were no other cards I would consider taking besides the three mentioned.

Got passed an Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, but took Triplicate Spirits instead.

Took a Seraph of the Masses over Turn to Frog.

Got a 5th pick Into the Void.

P2P1:   I don't remember what I took this pack honestly.

P3P1:  Perilous Vault over Borderland Marauder.  This was probably wrong, but I felt like I needed a boardwipe.

I got passed the Polymorphist's Jest second pick pack three.

I got passed the Goblin Kaboomist and the Burning Anger pretty late.

Rares:
Siege Dragon
Kurkesh, Onakke Ancient
Goblin Kaboomist
Mercurial Pretender (foil)
Jalira, Master Polymorphist (last pick)
Polymorphist's Jest
Perilous Vault

Red:
1 Foundry Street Denizen
1 Belligerent Sliver
1 Miner's Bane
-----
1 Crowd's Favor
1 Lava Axe

Artifact:
1 Staff of the Flame Magus

Match 1:  UR (0-2)

Game 1:

I keep a 2 lander on the play, with Goblin Kaboomist, and a few 3 drops.  I just need to draw either mountain or island to turn on my hand.   I end up dying to 2 Welkin Tern, Nimbus of the Isles, and Jace, the Living Guildpact.

Game 2:

Lose to Aetherspouts + Jace, the Living Guildpact.  Great.

I should have boarded into Coral Barrier this matchup.  I forgot about doing that.

Match 2:  GW (0-2)

Game 1:

My opponent curves out with Elvish Mystic, Kinsbaile Skirmisher, Warden of the Beyond, Hunt the Weak on his Warden and my Aeronaut Tinkerer into Devouring Light when I double block his Warden of the Beyond, then Sunblade Elf for the rubins.

Game 2:

I mull to 6, keep 4 lands, Evolving Wilds, Polymorphist's Jest.  I block his Kinsbaile Skirmisher with my Torch Fiend, he uses Ephmeral Shields.  Using Polymorphist's Jest would just be a 2 for 1 anyways.  I use Encrust on the Kinsbaile Skirmisher, he topdecks Invasive Species to bounce his Skirmisher.

I end up losing to Invasive Species with Divine Favor and Sungrace Pegasus with Divine Favor.

Opponent gives me the "good game" and offers the handshake.  I handshake him and say "good game" back then walk over to the store owner to tell him I'm dropping.

Result:  0-2

I drop out of this tournament.  Clearly I am unable to play the game correctly.

8/2/14 The heater is real (M15 drafts, 3-0, 3-0)

I went to Versus Games to draft.  I figured with most people going to Channel Fireball for the Modern States Championship that it meant the competition would be weaker.

Opened Polymorphist's Jest, Illusory Angel, and Turn to Frog.  The only other card I would have taken was Flesh to Dust.  I took Polymorphist's Jest, promptly got punished by not getting any other good blue cards.

I quickly moved to black/red.

Second pack I got Hoarding Dragon.  I passed an Ulcerate for Necrogen Scudder.  Probably wrong.

I value drafted a Llanowar Wastes in pack 3, since I needed one for my collection anyways, to finish my playset.

1 Tyrant's Machine
1 Staff of the Flame Magus

Land:
1 Radiant Fountain

Match 1:  WB (2-1)

Game 1:

He apparently missed one of my attacks for 2 damage, and said his life total was 2 higher than it actually was.  It ultimately ended up not mattering, because he had no answer for my Krenko's Enforcer.

Game 2:

Lost this game due to not doing math.  I played Sign in Blood on myself, discarded mountain.  Then my opponent Mind Rotted me, I discarded two more mountains.  Unfortunately, I only had one mountain in play, then proceeded to drew two Krenko's Enforcers and a Cone of Flame.  If I had been able to cast Cone of Flame the game would have actually been in my favor, but I died.

Game 3:

My opponent kept 3 lands 3 five drops.  All he played was Hot Soup and Sacred Armory then promptly died.

Match 2:   GW (2-0)

Game 1:

He got me to 2 life with Sanctified Charge, but then I killed him with my 4/2 Krenko's Enforcer with Inferno Fist, and sacrificed the fist for lethal.

Game 2:

I had to use a Cone of Flame to kill 3 Spirit tokens.  Meh.

I got out Accursed Spirit + Kird Chieftain.  He played a bunch of blockers with Siege Wurm and Triplicate Spirits, but he could not kill either creature, so I finished him off with a 5/2 trample intimidate.  The value.

Match 3:  UW (2-1)

Game 1:

Opponent curved out into Dauntless River Marshal into Geist of the Moors into Paragon of New Dawns into  Triplicate Spirits into Scuttling Doom Engine.

Game 2:

Opponent got stuck on blue mana, then died.

Game 3:

I got stuck on mana, had to discard Covenant of Blood.  He played a turn 3 Aeronaut Tinkerer, I drew my third land, played a Stab Wound on his 2/3.  Then I drew another land, next turn, played Accursed Spirit.  He died to Stab Wound + Accursed Spirit + Inferno Fist.

Result:  3-0, 4 packs

This draft, I opened Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Necrogen Scudder, Gravedigger, Stab Wound, and Flesh to Dust.  I picked Lightning Strike.  Then the person next to me passed me a pack with Indulgent Tormentor and Triplicate Spirits.  In a moment of weakness, I took Indulgent Tormentor.  Ended up getting cut out of black anyways before cards were wheeling, so I shifted in blue when I got a 6th pick Into the Void.

2nd pack I took a Hornet Queen, since I wasn't really locked into any colors except blue.  I ended up drafting Stoke the Flames over Ancient Silverblack, then locked myself into red.

3rd pack I don't remember the rare.

Match 4:  UR (2-0)

Game 1:

Ground him out of the game with flying Aeronaut Tinkerers.

Game 2:

Ground him out of the game with flying Aeronaut Tinkerers again,

Match 5:  GW (2-0)

Game 1:

He seemed a bit color screwed on mana,

Game 2:

I used Generator Servant into Stormtide Leviathan.  Unfortunately I forgot that Stormtide Leviathan makes all lands into islands and that it has islandwalk, so I skipped attacking with it.  It ultimately didn't matter since my opponent couldn't draw an answer to Stormtide Leviathan.

Match 6:  GW (2-1)

Game 1:

Lost to Sanctified Charge.

Game 2:

I had turn 2 Borderland Marauder.  He had turn 2 Ajani's Pridemate.  I attacked with the Marauder, he blocked, and I had to use my Lightning Strike post-blocks to kill his Pridemate, since I didn't have any other gas in hand.

Game 3:

He got stuck on two forests/one plains.

I assembled turn 4 Generator Servant into turn 5 Nimbus of the Isles into turn 6 hasted Glacial Crasher.  I then cast Into the Void on his Soulmender + Ajani's Pridemate.   Then he conceded.

Result:  3-0, 4 packs

8/1/14 Playing fast and loose (M15 draft 3-0)

I went to Gamescape North again.

P1P1:  Haunted Platemail over Ajani's Pridemate.

P2P1:   Took Feral Incarnation over Aggressive Mining.

P3P1:   Took Kinsbaile Skirmisher over Ob Nixilis, Unshackled.

I got three Triplicate Spirits in the first pack (pick 3, 4, and 6).   Never saw any more Triplicate Spirits.

I hate picked a Festergloom over Hunt the Weak.  Fortunately, I ended up getting a Hunt the Weak later.

I passed a third Siege Wurm for a third Oreskos Swiftclaw, and ended up getting a fourth Oreskos Swiftclaw next pack anyways.

I passed a Selfless Cathar for a second Raise the Alarm.  That was probably wrong.

I didn't see a SINGLE Sanctified Charge pass by.  Geez.

Match 1:  UW (2-0)

Game 1:

Assembled turn 1 Soulmender into turn 2 Ajani's Pridemate.

Game 2:

Assembled turn 1 Soulmender into turn 2 Ajani's Pridemate into turn 3 Ajani's Pridemate.  My opponent's able to make chump blockers with First Response and a Triplicate Spirits of his own, as well as two Nimbus of the Isles.  In the end, it doesn't matter.

Match 2:  RG (2-0)

Game 1:

I durdle a bit, but then I get the Soulmender + Ajani's Pridemate combo going.

Game 2:

Created a 5/5 Oreskos Swiftclaw with Divine Favor + Living Totem.

Assembled Triplicate Spirits into Siege Wurm.  Life is good.

Match 3:   UR (2-0)

This was the guy sitting on my right, who I passed a bunch of insane cards to.

Game 1:

Mull to 6, played a turn 3 Midnight Guard into turn 4 Living Totem.  He has Into the Void for both my guys, which sucks, then attacks with Krenko's Enforcer with Hammerhand which sucks.    I end up stabilizing once I replay the Midnight Guard then Hunt the Weak the Krenko's Enforcer after he taps out for Thundering Giant.  I trade off my 3/4 Midnight Guard for his Thundering Giant, then I stabilize at 7 life.

He did manage to get me down to 4 life, with Foundry Street Denizen with Invisibility. But I had way more creatures on board.  I think he should not have played so aggressively.

Game 2:

Lost after mull to 5, mana screw.   Didn't draw a single plains and died to Borderland Marauder + Hammer Hand + Paragon of Fierce Defiance.

Game 3:

Mull to 6, won off turn 1 Elvish Mystic into turn 2 Raise the Alarm into turn 3 Triplicate Spirits into turn 5 Feral Incarnation.   Into the Void gets rid of two of my tokens.  He cast Turn to Frog on one of my Beast tokens when I attacked with just my Spirit and Beast token, which was annoying.  I definitely think I should have attacked with all my beast tokens when he left only two mana up, since I knew then he couldn't blow me out with Polymorphist's Jest.

He was at 10 life and I had 2 3/3 Beast tokens and Siege Wurm, a 1/1 soldier, a 1/1 spirit token, an Oreskos Swiftclaw, and a Kinsbaile Skirmisher.  He had Amphin Pathmage and Foundry Street Denizen untapped, no mana untapped (he used it the previous turn to make his Thundering Giant and Altac Bloodseeker unblockable).   I attack with most of my guys, leaving Swiftclaw and Soulmender at home.  He ends up blocking in a way that he takes 10 damage anyways.

I missed a couple Soulmender activations this game, but it didn't matter.

I also forgot to sideboard in Bronze Sable after almost losing to Krenko's Enforcer the previous game.

Result:  3-0 (6-1 in games), six booster packs

I feel like I have a better handle of how the M15 drafts work, but I don't think I have necessarily become a limited master.
